[break] The UGA soccer team opened its spring season on Saturday afternoon, falling to defending National Champion Florida State 2-1 in Tallahassee in a game that featured a format of three 30-minute periods.

Florida State opened the game with a goal in the first five minutes of play off of the Seminoles’ first corner kick of the game. Rising sophomore Mariel Gutierrez evened the scoring on a strike on goal from 25 yards out that beat the keeper. The Seminoles scored the winning goal with just nine minutes remaining in the exhibition on another corner kick.

“It was a terrific learning experience for us as a team,” first-year head coach Billy Lesesne said following the match. “Our team showed a great willingness to try the new things that we wanted to implement as a coaching staff. I think this was a great success for us and it gives us a lot of film and material to work on and improve upon as we go through the spring. I was very pleased with the way our team responded to some of the situations we were put in. The game was really level throughout. Florida State was just better than us in certain situations. I think the team is very proud of the way they played today as well.”

Georgia will resume play on March 19 when the Bulldogs face off against SEC rival Auburn in an exhibition match in Atlanta at 7:30 p.m.
