Red and Black Showcase: Georgia Wallops Winthrop 10-2 in Five

[break] The No. 12/10 Georgia Bulldogs got its fifth run-rule victory of the weekend when it took down Winthrop 10-2 in the finale of the Eighth Annual Red and Black Showcase at Jack Turner Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 after sweeping the competition in the season opening tournament.

[break] [break] Chelsea Wilkinson got the win for the Bulldogs to improve to 4-0 on the year. She allowed two runs on one hit in four innings of work. She also struck out eight, while only allowing one walk. Brittany Gray came in to pitch a perfect fifth inning, striking out one. Sara Allen picked up the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.  She allowed nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits and one walk in two innings of work. Sutton Watson also pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits.
[break] [break] Georgia struck early as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Cortni Emanuel led off with a speedy single that dribbled to the pitcher.  She then stole her 12th base of the year. After a single by Sydni Emanuel, Paige Wilson put the Bulldogs on the board with an RBI single. Next, Alex Hugo added two more with a double to right. A couple of batters later Anna Swafford belted a ball off of the right field wall for a triple, scoring Hugo for the fourth and final run of the inning.

[break] In the second, Georgia tacked on five more runs. C. Emanuel quickly circled the bases when she led off with an infield single to third before advancing to second on a bad throw. She then stole third and scored on an overthrow by the catcher. S. Emanuel and Wilson followed with back-to-back infield singles. Hugo then reached base on an error by Winthrop’s shortstop, Maddie Antone, which scored S. Emanuel. Puailoa added two more to the Bulldog lead with a double to right. Katie Collins then made it 9-0 with a sacrifice fly.
[break] [break] Georgia topped off its great offensive performance when C. Emanuel reached on her third infield single of the game, her sister, S.Emanuel, then knocked her in for the Bulldogs 10th run of the game.

[break] Winthrop ended Georgia’s shutout bid in the fourth when Antone homered to left that made it a 10-2 game.
[break] [break] Georgia returns to action next Friday night, Feb. 13 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Elon in the 12th Annual Georgia Softball Classic. The games are scheduled for 3 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.
