A balanced team performance on Sunday guided the No. 12 Georgia softball team to an 11-0 win in five innings over Winthrop, as the Bulldogs finished the opening weekend 4-0 at the Red and Black Showcase.

Sophomore Brittany Gray threw another gem in the circle, allowing the Eagles two hits and striking out nine. Gray retired the first six batters by strikeout while the first hit against her didn’t come until the top of the fifth.

At the plate, the Bulldogs had 44 hits over the four games, including 12 in the Valentine’s Day matchup against Winthrop. Seniors Alex Hugo, Tina Iosefa and Kaylee Puailoa each had two hits while junior Maeve McGuire tallied a pair as well. Puailoa put up her second home run of the early year, giving her a team-best three RBI in the contest.

Georgia put up at least three runs in three of its four innings on offense, as a double from Hugo and sacrifice fly from freshman Alyssa DiCarlo got things started in the first. After no runs in the second, Hugo led off the third with double then scored on a single down the line by Iosefa. A DiCarlo walk put the runners on for Puailoa to crank one over the right field wall and force Winthrop to bring starter Dallas King (0-2) out of the game.

The Eagles reliever, Kiley Majette, fared no better, giving up six hits and four runs in the final two innings of the game. Cortni Emauel, DiCarlo, McGuire and Katie Browne each tabbed a RBI to bring in the win’s final runs.

Georgia hits the road the next two weekends, as the Bulldogs first stop will be the Disney Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla. Omaha, Stetson, Stephen F. Austin, Jacksonville State and UAB are all on the docket with the tournament beginning on Feb. 19.
