The University of Georgia softball team’s senior Sydni Emanuel, junior Cortni Emanuel and sophomore Alyssa DiCarlo were named to the Preseason All-SEC list.
Georgia ties Florida and LSU for the most honorees while Tennessee and Texas A&M follow with two each. The Preseason All-SEC Softball Team is voted on by the league’s head coaches and consists of a minimum of 14 players. Each SEC head coach voted for five infielders, four outfielders, three pitchers, one catcher and one designated player/utility. No ties were broken.
S. Emanuel, C. Emanuel and DiCarlo each garnered All-SEC honors at the end of last season while both Emanuels earned a spot on the NFCA All-Region Second Team.
Originally from Missouri City, Texas, S. Emanuel tied for the top batting average in the league and was 20th nationally in 2016 after hitting .441 with 78 hits and 48 runs. Against league opponents, the outfielder held the best batting average in the SEC at .514 while the next closest was a .410 mark. The senior tabbed a team-best 25 multi-hit games, including a four-hit performance versus Stephen F. Austin. Her .484 on-base percentage also ranked in the top 15 of the conference.
C. Emanuel followed her sister with the second-best average on the team at .404. The lefty speedster had a team-high 82 hits with 56 runs while tallying 33 stolen bases, giving her 78 in her career. The outfielder was named a top 25 finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year while the year before she was a top 10 finalist for Freshman of the Year. In 2016, the Texas native set the school record with a 23-game hit streak.
DiCarlo carried a strong bat in her freshman season, finishing the year with a .371 clip after posting 75 hits, including 16 doubles and 11 home runs. The Glendale, Arizona, native ranked 15th in the nation with 63 RBI, which was the most of any freshman in Division I. The third baseman was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times in 2016 while also being named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
The 2017 season begins on February 10 when Georgia hosts the 10th Annual Red and Black Showcase. Winthrop, Syracuse and East Carolina make up the weekend tournament, as the Bulldogs open with Winthrop on that Friday at 3 p.m. ET at Jack Turner Stadium followed by a game with Syracuse at approximately 5:30 p.m. ET.
