[su_spacer size=”20″] The University of Georgia has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2015 NCAA Division I Softball Championships, the NCAA announced on Sunday night, May 10. Georgia received the No. 14 seed in the tournament. The NCAA Athens Regional will be Friday, May 15 – Sunday, May 17. The Athens Regional will be televised on the SEC Network+ and ESPN3.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The 2015 NCAA Athens Regional at the Jack Turner Softball Stadium will feature host Georgia (40-14), North Carolina (36-14), Western Kentucky (33-12) and Central Connecticut State (31-12).
[su_spacer size=”40″] In addition to earning the top seed for the Athens Regional, Georgia is also the 14th-overall seed. The regional round of play features a four-team double elimination bracket, and the Bulldogs opening round contest will come against Central Connecticut State at 5 p.m., on Friday, May 15. North Carolina and Western Kentucky will play in the opening game of the Athens Regional at 2:30 p.m.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia is making both its 14th-consecutive and 14th overall NCAA postseason appearance in school history, all under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. The Bulldogs have hosted a NCAA Regional eight times.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs are 50-27 overall in NCAA postseason play, and advanced to the Women’s College World Series final four in 2009 and 2010. Last season, Georgia advanced to the Super Regionals before falling to Baylor.
[su_spacer size=”40″] A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 30 conferences being awarded automatic qualification, while the remaining 34 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally with Georgia earning the 14th overall seed.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The SEC sent a total of 11 teams selected for the tournament, with seven of those teams earning one of the 16 national seeds and four earning top eight national seeds. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play May 23-24. The winner of the Athens Regional is paired with the winner of the Ann Arbor Regional.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In Super Regionals, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City May 29-June 4.
