Fresh off its fourth-straight Southeastern Conference Championship, the Georgia men’s tennis team has earned the No. 7 seed and has been selected as one of 16 hosts for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, it was announced on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs will take on South Carolina State in the first round on Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m. ET, while Florida State will face Baylor earlier in the day at 10 a.m. ET. The winners of those two matches will meet at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 15.
This year’s NCAA Championships will take place in Tulsa, Okla., with later rounds and the individual singles and doubles tournaments to be held on May 19-30.
“We are excited to be going in as a No. 7 seed and to be hosting,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “We have a tremendous regional. I think it is as good as a field we have had here in Athens for a regional that I can remember with programs like Florida State, Baylor and South Carolina State coming in. I told our guys you prepare for the toughest draw, and we are excited, healthy and ready to go.”
Tuesday’s announcement marks the 38th NCAA Tournament appearance and the 33rd-consecutive NCAA bid for the Bulldogs. Georgia has won six NCAA National Championships as a team (1985, 1987, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008), while a Georgia player has won the NCAA Singles Championship four times (Mikael Pernfors in 1984 and 1985; Matias Boeker in 2001 and 2002). The Bulldogs have claimed the doubles title on three occasions — Ola Malmqvist and Allen Miller in 1983, Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott in 2001 and John Isner and Antonio Ruiz in 2005.
The Georgia women’s tennis team drew the fifth overall seed and will first host North Florida in the first round, with the winner of that contest to face the winner of Wake Forest and Baylor. Georgia’s women will compete on Friday, May 13, at 4 p.m., and if it wins it will play its second match on Saturday, May 14, at 4 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children/students and free for children ages 2 and under. Tickets will go on sale online via the school’s official athletics website at www.GeorgiaDogs.com beginning on Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET and running through Friday, May 13 at 8 a..m. ET. All ticket sales after that will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
