Sophomore Kennedy Shaffer claimed the team lead in wins on the year, taking number 32 by defeating Rice’s Katherine Ip in three sets on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Shaffer continued an impressive run at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, winning her third match in three days and becoming Georgia’s 31st all-time All-American.

The Rossford, Ohio native claimed the first set with a tightly-contested 6-4 win. Ip, ranked No. 104 by the ITA, countered with a 6-3 win in the second set after taking the final three games.

With the match coming down to the third set, Shaffer quickly seized control as she shot out to a large lead, ultimately finishing off Ip for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win.

Shaffer will face Pepperdine’s Luisa Stefani with a chance to advance to the semifinals. The two competed in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships with Stefani emerging victorious 6-4, 6-1. Shaffer will be looking for her 10th upset of the season when she takes on Stefani, ranked No. 6 by the ITA.

The time of Saturday’s match has yet to be determined.
