Athens native Alex Diaz has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Georgia and play tennis for the Bulldogs, according to an announcement by head coach Manuel Diaz.
Alex Diaz, who is the son of Manuel and Suzanne Diaz, rounds out Georgia’s signing class that also includes Nathan Ponwith, the No. 1-ranked player in the nation from Scottsdale, Ariz., Robert Loeb from Hilton Head, S.C., and Alex Phillips from Peachtree City, Ga.[su_spacer size=”40″]
“We’re excited about this outstanding class,” Manuel Diaz said. “One of them is my son, so I have seen him grow up in front of my eyes. The others are kids that we have seen since very early on. They are all friends, and they have a great relationship and they wanted to go to school together. They want to compete for championships, so they are very hungry. I know they are all going to make us proud.”[su_spacer size=”40″]
Alex Diaz is a five-star recruit and the No. 4 player in Georgia, according to tennisrecruiting.net. He won the USTA Southern Clay Court Boys’ 18s earlier this year in Birmingham, Ala., and also reached the doubles round of 16 in Kalamazoo.[su_spacer size=”40″]
“I’ve grown up watching the UGA team play and watching my dad coach on court,” Diaz said. “Now it’s my turn to have the experience and I’m excited about it.”[su_spacer size=”40″]
