The Bulldogs finished strong at the MLK Invitational as the Georgia’s Men’s Tennis team took 21 total victories from the weekend’s tournament. Sophomore Wayne Montgomery earned MLK Invitational Singles Champion honors as the seventh-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team earned six victories Monday afternoon against No. 2 Oklahoma with two doubles and four singles wins on the final day of the MLK Invitational at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

“Overall I thought we played a great match today,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “To be honest I thought that we could’ve played a little bit better in doubles than we did. We got broke at number two, three times, but we still competed so well and played extremely well from behind. It’s a good sign to be able to come out with a victory when you play a little bit less than your very best. I was very impressed with everyone’s overall level today.”

In doubles, No. 10 Ben Wagland and Austin Smith dropped an early match 6-3, but the Bulldogs followed the loss up with a pair of victories. No. 45 Wayne Montgomery and Emil Reinberg took a 6-4 advantage over Austin Siegel and Florin Bragusi and Jan Zielinski and Paul Oosterbaan won a tiebreaker match against Andre Biro and Alex Ghilhea 7-6 (4).

Zielinksi got things going for the Bulldogs in singles matches on court six with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Oklahoma’s Austin Siegel. Wagland followed up Zielinski’s performance taking the first two sets in his match 6-1, 7-5 against Andre Biro. Georgia dropped its next two matches with Austin Smith falling 6-2, 7-5 against Axel Alvarez Llamas and Walker Duncan losing 6-4, 6-2 to Alex Ghilea. No. 20 Wayne Montgomery split a pair of sets with Spencer Papa on court four, but dominated the third set 6-1 to take the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Georgia’s final match of the day saw Emil Reinberg earn a victory against Florin Bragusi 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Bulldogs return home for their first home meet of the spring season hosting the ITA Kickoff Weekend Jan. 23-24. Louisville, Memphis and UC Santa Barbara will join the Bulldogs in competition.
