UGA men’s tennis junior Emil Reinberg advanced in singles and teamed with sophomore Nathan Ponwith for a doubles win on the first day of main draw competition at the 2017 Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships.

In singles, Reinberg had a strong performance against Penn State’s Constant De La Bassetiere in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory. The Atlanta native then paired with Ponwith for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 triumph against Duke’s 12th-ranked tandem of Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak.

In other singles action, the three remaining Georgia players — Wayne Montgomery, Ponwith and Walker Duncan — lost to ranked opponents. Montgomery fell to 43rd-ranked Alexis Galarneau from NC State, 6-2, 7-6 (3), while Ponwith dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 match to 34th-ranked Nicolas Alvarez from Duke. Duncan led 5-3 in the second set but could not hang on in a 6-3, 7-5 loss to second-ranked Nuno Borges from Mississippi State.

Georgia’s second-ranked doubles duo of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski fell to 4-2 overall in the fall with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 defeat to round out Georgia’s day.

“We had a rough day results-wise,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “We had a lot of close matches that did not go our way today, but we fought hard. We need to show some toughness and resiliency tomorrow and want to get better. The challenges here are big each time out but so are the rewards.”
