Day two of the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Championships came to a close Saturday with five players from the University of Georgia men’s tennis team earning spots in the singles quarterfinals.
Wayne Montgomery will face teammate Jan Zielinski, while Robert Loeb will face Emil Reinberg in the Round of 8. Andy Martinez also advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Jason Kros from Virginia Tech. All singles matches will start at 10:15 a.m ET today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The day started with a pair of doubles wins for the Bulldogs — one coming from the duo of Alex Phillips and Martinez and the other from Walker Duncan and Wayne Montgomery. One of the top tandems in the nation, the Georgia duo of Loeb and Zielinski advanced to the quarterfinals after Robert Herrera and Sergi Fontcuberta from East Tennessee State withdrew.
Loeb and Zielinski saw their first action of the 2017-18 season just minutes later. It was a good start for the two Bulldogs as they took down Georgia State’s Andrei Andrukhou and Quentin Coulaud, 8-6 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.
Duncan and Montgomery also advanced to the final four with an 8-3 victory against Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton of Ole Miss. All doubles matches are slated for a 9:00 a.m. ET start on this moprning.
