The No. 7-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team had an impressive start to the 2016 spring season, winning five singles matches, while picking up two doubles wins against SEC foe and No. 19-ranked Ole Miss on Saturday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The day started with action on four doubles courts, where Georgia split with Ole Miss, taking wins at two of the four spots. Austin Smith, Paul Oosterbaan, Wayne Montgomery, Ben Wagland and Andy Martinez then finished the day with victories in singles. Smith’s match went all the way to a 16-14 tiebreaker in what was a back-and-forth match at the top singles position.

“I thought we played really well at all spots today,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “We benefited from being pushed in every single match, and I thought it was just really high-quality tennis today. It’s a great start for us and we have to get tuned up and get ready to go out again tomorrow.”

Playing at the first court, the duo of Oosterbaan and Jan Zielinski, who was playing for the first time as a Georgia Bulldog, downed the Rebel duo of Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton, 7-6 (3) in a tie-breaker set. UGA’s other win in doubles came at the third position, where the No. 45-ranked duo of Wayne Montgomery and Emil Reinberg won 6-4 over Ole Miss’ Gustav Hansson and Stefan Lindmark.

Ole Miss pulled out victories over the Bulldogs at the second and fourth doubles courts. Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic of Ole Miss took a 6-4 win against Georgia’s No. 10-ranked duo of Smith and Wagland, 6-4, at the second court. Meanwhile, UGA’s Walker Duncan and Martinez fell in a tight tie-breaker set, 7-6 (5) at court No. 4.

In singles, Smith fought through a back-and-forth 16-14 tiebreaker in the second set to claim a 6-3, 7-6 (14) victory against Hamilton at the top singles spot. Oosterbaan and Montgomery each battled through three sets to pull out wins — Oosterbaan took a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory, while Montgomery won, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot.

Wagland and Martinez rounded out the UGA wins on the day, each winning straight-set matches — Martinez a 6-1-6-2 win against Robert Mounger and Wagland a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Gowda.

Georgia will be back in action on Sunday as the Bulldogs take on No. 2 Oklahoma on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. Once again, no team scores will be recorded, but singles and doubles champions will be crowned based on the round robin results.
