Georgia sophomore men’s tennis player Wayne Montgomery has been named the SEC Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Montgomery earns the honor after helping the Bulldogs down No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday, stopping the Buckeyes’ seven-match win streak. The Somerset West, South Africa native put UGA up 3-0 over Ohio State by taking down 24th-ranked Hugo Di Feo, 7-5, 6-3, to move to 5-3 at the No. 2 court and 4-4 against ranked opponents this season.

The 34th-ranked Montgomery has won two-straight matches this season after claiming a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph against South Carolina’s Andrew Schafer last week, in addition to his win against Ohio State. The latest honor adds to a long list of accomplishments for Montgomery. Last season, he was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Year, was an All-SEC performer and earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors on three occasions.

Georgia is currently riding a six-match win streak heading into this weekend’s action. The Bulldogs have earned victories against five teams who are ranked in the ITA Rankings during the current six-match stretch.

Montgomery and the Bulldogs hope to continue the hot trend as they host Tennessee at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, before returning home to face Kentucky at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
