The University of Georgia men’s tennis team won five total matches against Georgia Tech Monday on the final day of the 2021 MLK Invitational Tournament.
Baptiste Anselmo and Britton Johnston highlighted doubles action for the Bulldogs, taking a 7-5 win against Tech’s Brandon Freestone and Zummy Bauer. The win improved the duo’s record to 3-0 this weekend.
The Bulldogs then posted a 4-3 record against the Yellow Jackets on the singles courts.
“We had a better day today,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “Tech served too big against us in doubles and did not allow us to control play, but many of our guys bounced back in singles and got better. We have a lot of work to do to become the team we want to be. We are looking forward to the start of the dual-match season against Mercer and FSU this coming weekend. These matches today go a long way in getting us ready.”
Georgia used straight-set wins at courts four, five and six to begin singles competition. Billy Rowe ousted Brandon McKinney, 6-4, 6-1, Blake Croyder downed Pablo Schelcher, 7-5, 6-2 and Erik Grevelius took a 6-4, 6-4 win against Chen Dong.
Tyler Zink picked up the fourth win of the day for Georgia. After cruising in the first set 6-0, Zink hung on in a tiebreaker second set for the 6-0, 7-6 triumph against Marcus McDaniel.
Georgia begins the dual-match season this weekend with a pair of matches. The Bulldogs host Mercer at 2:30 p.m. Friday, before welcoming Florida State at noon on Sunday.
