The Georgia men’s tennis team finished with a perfect 4-0 record in singles play to open the 2017 Battle in the Bay Tennis Classic on Friday in San Franciso, California.

 
Wayne Montgomery, Emil Reinberg, Nathan Ponwith and Walker Duncan all won their Round of 32 matches to move on to the Round of 16. The unblemished record in singles helped the Bulldogs recover from a tough start in doubles, where both Georgia duos took 8-6 losses.
 
 
“We got off to a slow start this morning in doubles,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “But we had a great day in singles. We are looking forward to some bigger challenges tomorrow.”
 
 
Duncan staged a furious comeback in the third set to win his match. After splitting the first two sets, the Bulldog junior found himself down 5-1 in the third. Duncan rallied and defeated California’s Dominc Barretto, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
 
 
Reinberg won with relative ease in a 6-2, 6-2 victory against San Francisco’s Oliver Poysti. Ponwith cruised in the first set and hung on in the second-set tiebreaker with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win against Cal’s Jacob Brumm, before Montgomery stormed out to a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
 
 
The day actually started with doubles action, where the Georgia duos were seeded No. 1 and 3. California got the better half of the Bulldogs as Ponwith/Reinberg and Duncan/Montgomery fell in 8-6 contests.
 
 
Georgia will now prepare for Day Two on Saturday before wrapping up action on Sunday.
