On Sunday afternoon match in Columbia, SC, the No. 6 Georgia women’s tennis team handed the No. 21 Gamecocks a 4-0 defeat and won their fourth match in a row.

The Bulldogs (11-3, 4-1 SEC) claimed the doubles point for the fifth-consecutive match. Then Georgia’s first three singles courts finished in order to secure the victory.

“It was nice to get the doubles point again,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “I thought it was a great doubles point. They were really close matches. The No. 1 played really outstanding and the other two were close. It gave us momentum going into singles. (Ellen) Perez and (Christofi) rolled again, then Kennedy (Shaffer) closed it out. It was a great weekend for us. Now we are just excited to head home and get ready for two big SEC home matches.”

In doubles, Ellen Perez and Caroline Brinson defeated the Gamecocks’ ranked duo of Hadley Berg and Paige Cline (#27), 6-3 on court one. At No. 2, Elena Christofi and Kennedy Shaffer edged Silvia Chinellato and Caroline Dailey, 7-5 to improve to 9-4 on the season. The last doubles court was battling in a tiebreaker when Christofi/Shaffer clinched the point.

On singles court one and two, Perez and Christofi brushed off both of South Carolina’s ranked players 6-1,6-3 to give Georgia a 3-0 lead. Perez, ranked 55th in ITA singles, beat Mia Horvit (#58), while 18th-ranked Christofi downed Ingrid Gamarra Martins (#35). The two Bulldogs went 4-0 over the weekend in their singles and doubles matches.

Shortly after Christofi won, Shaffer clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Paige Cline on court three. In the final point, Shaffer’s close net play forced Cline’s final shot wide. The clincher was Shaffer’s third this season and it marked her fourth-straight win.

Georgia resumes its home schedule against No. 25 Ole Miss on Friday, March 24th at 5 p.m.
