Katarina Jokic of the fifth-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for play during the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, announced Wednesday by the conference office.
The weekly accolade marks Jokic’s second recognition in the conference’s third week of season awards.
In Madison, Wis., the site of the National Indoors, Jokic collectively went 4-0 in singles and doubles, helping the Bulldogs to a 2-1 record against three top-15 ranked opponents.
Jokic, of Novi Grad, Bosnia, represented the only freshman in the 16-team field to win all three of her doubles matches. Playing on court No. 2, Jokic and senior Mariana Gould notched two doubles point clinchers in their team-high three wins. Highlighting the duo’s run was a win over Duke’s No. 2-ranked Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitylin McCarthy, which marked their highest-ranked victory of the season. The 18th-ranked Gould/Jokic improved to 18-3 overall and maintained their perfect dual record, now 6-0.
In singles, Jokic faced three opponents ranked in the top-15, which stood as the toughest slate for a freshman at the ITA Indoors. Jokic, ranked No. 8 in ITA singles, defeated ninth-ranked Samantha Harris of Duke to record her highest-ranked singles win of the season. The other two singles matches went unfinished, however Jokic was leading the top-ranked player in the country, Bianca Turati (Texas), before Georgia clinched the win. All of Jokic’s matches occurred on the No. 1 court and the one win marked the only freshman victory on court No. 1 in the tournament. On the season, Jokic moved to 23-3 overall including eight wins over ranked opponents.
The Bulldogs (5-1) transition to the outdoor portion of the schedule, which starts with a match at Georgia Tech next Friday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
