WOMEN’S TENNIS: Lady Bulldogs Advance to ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship

Athens, GA — The No. 3 Georgia women’s tennis team defeated Michigan State 7-0 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship match in the ITA-Kickoff at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Center.

The Lady Bulldogs will face Notre Dame in the championship match, scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon, January 26th at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Fighting Irish defeated Furman in an earlier match on Saturday, 4-2. The winner of Sunday’s championship will earn the right to move on to compete in the National Indoor Tournament from February 7-10 in Chicago, Illinois.

In doubles, sophomores Alee Clayton and Meg Kowalski dropped their set 6-3 to Nicole Stephens and Samantha Memije on court three. On court one, after falling behind 4-2, Katarina Jokic and Anna Hertel won four straight sets against Lauren Lemonds and Maja Pietrowicz to tie it up one apiece with court two deciding the doubles point. Seniors Marta Gonzalez and Elena Christofi rallied back from a 4-2 deficit of their own to win the doubles point for the Bulldogs, defeating Mary Lewis and Jennifer Timotin.

In singles, on court four, Hertel defeated Stephens 6-2, 6-2 in her first taste of collegiate action with No. 46 Gonzalez quickly behind her defeating Lemonds 6-0, 6-5 in the number three spot. No. 19 Freshman Lea Ma sealed the victory for the Dawgs with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Memije. No. 17 Jokic defeated No. 110 Mary Lewis in the number one spot before Christofi and No. 83 Morgan Coppoc both cruised to victories to cap off the afternoon.
