The Georgia track and field team have 12 sprinters and mid-distance runners competing today in South Carolina’s Gamecock Invitational in Columbia.
This meet comes a week after the Spec Towns Invitational and the Bulldog Decathlon/Heptathlon concluded in Athens. This marks the fourth outdoor meet of the year and precedes the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., on April 21-22.
This Saturday, the Bulldog runners will be getting an opportunity to run on the track that will be used for the Southeastern Conference Championships on May 11-13. Following the Virginia Challenge next weekend, the inaugural Torrin Lawrence Memorial in Athens on May 6 is the last regular season meet before the postseason begins.
For the fifth-ranked Bulldog men, seniors Maurice Freeman, Ayrian Evans and Reggie Glover, juniors Cejhae Greene and Gabe Blackman and sophomore Kendal Williams are scheduled to compete on South Carolina’s campus Saturday.
Juniors Katie Stone and Devon Artis and freshmen Catherine Reid, Micaiah Ransby, Chelsea Zoller and Amber Tanner are slated to represent the sixth-ranked Georgia women.
“We had some team members with an exam on April 21 and felt like it was in their best interest academically to be in class next week for that,” said Bulldog associate head coach Ken Harnden. “So the sprints will compete in South Carolina this weekend and then train through to the next home meet. We are excited to get a shot to run on the track that’ll be used for SECs and get a feel for it.”
The 4x100m relay team of Williams, Greene, Glover and Freeman who set a school record of 39.21 last weekend, which is ranked sixth nationally, is expected to run again on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. Freeman and Evans are scheduled to return to the track in the 400m for the second consecutive week at 12:40 p.m., as is Greene in the 100m at 2 p.m. Williams, Glover and Blackman are also planning on running the 200m (4 p.m.) and the Bulldog men will field a 4x400m relay team at 5:20 p.m. as well.
Reid and Artis are expected to run in the women’s 400m at 12:20 p.m. and Stone will take the track in both the 100m (1:40 p.m.) and 200m (3:40 p.m.). Tanner is slated to compete in the 800m while it is probable that Zoller will run in the 400m hurdles for the third time this season at 3 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs are also scheduled to run the 4x400m relay at 5 p.m. ET.
