The No. 10 Georgia softball team hosted their Annual Red and Black Showcase this weekend and finished undefeated at 5-0. Georgia sealed the deal on Sunday after defeating East Carolina 3-1.
The starting pitcher for the Bulldogs on Sunday was Brittany Gray who went 3-0 on the weekend. She pitched all seven innings and only allowed three hits. She struck out three batters, which brings her tally to 14 strikeouts on the season. Georgia’s freshmen led the team in hits on Sunday with Justice Milz and Ciara Bryan having two each. The Bulldogs had a total of seven hits on the day.
Georgia’s offense got off to a rocky start, staying scoreless for the first four innings. However, in the fifth inning, the bats started lighting up. Both teams got their offense going, and during the top of the inning, the Pirates worked their way to a 1-0 lead. East Carolina scored after a walk to Ali Ramirez allowed a base runner on before pinch runner Olivia Narron came home after she stole a base and an error from the Georgia defense and quick single from Megan Quick.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the fifth with Milz opening up the inning with a single to the left side. Bryan and Kendall Burton each followed with bunt singles. Burton’s bunt set up Cortni Emanuel up for a two-RBI double. The game quickly went from 1-0 to 3-1 after Alyssa DiCarlo hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Although ECU attempted to make a comeback, they fell short as the Bulldogs defense left the Pirates with two baserunners clinching the Georgia victory.
Georgia will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 for a doubleheader against Presbyterian. The first game starts at 3:30 p.m.
