Key Quotes

Head Coach Tony Baldwin

On the team’s overall performance…

I’m just proud of the resilience that we showed. Sometimes when you’re in a tough spot, the first sign of adversity just reverts back to you thinking, ‘here we go again.’ But I thought we really dug in today and competed. Really proud of our seniors. And you know, just fun to see them settle in and just play softball. To let some of the burden go and just compete. When we play with that kind of freedom, we can be a pretty good team and then really excited for Lilli [Backes]. We’re a little short-staffed right now and she’s carrying the load. She was out there just gritting her teeth and getting the job done. So super proud of her and good team win today.”

NFL Draft: Two more Dawgs selected

Sedrick Van Pran

Two more Bulldogs were selected in the fifth and sixth rounds to cap off the third and final day of the 2024 NFL Draft on Saturday.

The draft weekend’s conclusion brings Georgia’s 2024 total to eight players selected, marking the fourth-most taken in a class in program history and the Kirby Smart era.

Junior center Sedrick Van Pran was the first Bulldog taken on day three, selected by the Buffalo Bills as the 141st overall pick (sixth pick of the fifth round). The selection marks the third Bulldog offensive lineman picked by the Bills and the first since Cordy Glenn in 2012. Georgia has had nine players selected by Buffalo, with three coming in the last five years (Jake Fromm – 2020, James Cook – 2022, Sedrick Van – 2024).

In the following round, senior defensive lineman Zion Logue was selected by the Atlanta Falcons as the 197th overall pick (21st pick of the sixth round). Logue is the first Bulldog defensive lineman prospect selected by the Falcons and first defensive player since Akeem Dent in 2011. Georgia has had 12 players drafted by Atlanta since 1968, with Logue being the third in the last three seasons to remain in-state (Justin Shaffer & John Fitzpatrick – 2022).

Zion Logue

Van Pran, a native of New Orleans, La., was a three-year starter at center, playing in all 44 games of his Georgia career while serving as a key piece in the Bulldogs’ back-to-back national championship campaigns in 2021 and 2022. A team captain in 2023, Van Pran’s performance over the course of the season earned him honors as the recipient of the SEC Jacobs Blocking Trophy and finalist consideration for the Rimington Trophy. Van Pran was named a First Team All-American by ESPN and Sports Illustrated while earning an SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honor after his performance against South Carolina. Prior to his junior season, Van Pran was named to the Preseason Media Days All-SEC First Team as well as the Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, and Senior Bowl watch lists.

Logue, a native of Lebanon, Tenn., started in 16 of 50 games played through five seasons with the Bulldogs, where he tallied 52 total tackles including 28 solo stops with 4.5 coming for loss of yardage. The senior also registered 1.5 sacks, three passes deflected and a forced fumble and recovery. In 2023, Logue started in 10 games and posted a career-high 17 tackles, largely contributing to a defense that ranked fifth nationally in Scoring Defense (15.6 points/game).

With the selection of Amarius Mims on Thursday and Van Pran on Saturday, Georgia has now had two or more offensive lineman taken in a draft in each of the last five seasons.

BSB: Georgia splits doubleheader with TAMU

The 17th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs split a doubleheader with top-ranked Texas A&M Saturday at Olsen Field, falling 19-9 in game one and then beating the Aggies 5-4 in the series finale as Charlie Condon set the Bulldogs single season and career home run records.

Fast Facts Game One

• Redshirt sophomore Charlie Condon tied the Georgia single season and career home run record with his NCAA-leading 28th home run in the first inning to give him 53 for his career in just 98 games. It traveled 433 feet and put the Bulldogs up 9-0. He tied Gordon Beckham’s 28 home runs in 71 games in 2008 and his career mark of 53 over 197 games from 2006-08.

• After the first inning, the score was 9-8 Georgia as both teams batted around and hit three home runs apiece. It was the 17th time this year that the Bulldogs batted around. The nine runs in an inning were the most by the Bulldogs in an SEC game this year.

• Senior Fernando Gonzalez crushed his third career grand slam (second this year) as part of a nine-run first. It was the team’s 10th grand slam this year, which is a school record.

• In the sixth, the Aggies took the lead on a two-run single by Caden Sorrell, and it was part of an eight-run outburst to make it 17-9. In the seventh, the sixth home run of the day by Texas A&M made it a 19-7 walk-off via the run rule.

• Sophomore right-hander Kolten Smith made his first start of the season and ninth of his career. He had made 13 relief appearances this year before Saturday. Smith registered 11 strikeouts over six innings, both career highs as a starter, for a win to improve to 6-2.

• Freshman Tre Phelps Branch delivered a pinch-hit two-run home run in the seventh 13th to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. It was his fourth home run of the year.

• Sophomore Kolby Branch blasted his 13th home run in the seventh to make it a 2-1 contest.

• In the eighth, the Aggies had two on and nobody out and graduate Christian Mracna came back to strike out the next three Aggies to maintain a 5-4 advantage. He notched a save by striking out six of the seven batters he faced over the final two innings.

Key Quotes

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Wes Johnson

“Today showed the heart and character of our team. We talk a lot about toughness and the grind as this was our third doubleheader in as many weeks. It was another phenomenal outing from Kolten Smith, executing four pitches in the strike zone and then what Christian Mracna did there at the end, that’s what big-time guys do. I’m proud of them and the whole team. The first game didn’t go the way we wanted to. I knew Kolten would get us off to a good start in game two. I told the guys to hang in there. How about Tre Phelps’ home run? How big was that and then Charlie’s home run, it was everybody. A good team win, only their second loss at home all year, and the reason they’re number one in the country. We need to carry this momentum into next week.”

Charlie Condon, RSo. 3B: On the setting the home run single season and career record

“First it was a big-time win for this group and really excited about that and to get out of Aggieland with a W. It’s amazing just the path the past couple of years. I redshirted my freshman year and have worked really hard. It’s really fun for it to pay off with a group like this. I love being able to contribute with such a great group of good guys and all that good stuff. It means a lot, and we’re not done yet. We’re going to keep on rolling, and hopefully will be a couple more coming.”

• The Bulldogs’ second point came from Buck Brumlow who took his match against John Driscoll 1-up. This marks the junior’s fifth career win in match play and his first at the SEC Championships.

• The match was decided on the final hole of the final match, where Jacob Skov Olesen defeated freshman Camden Smith.

Key Quotes

“The guys fought extremely hard today,” head coach Chris Haack said. “We played a really good Arkansas team that made us play them all the way down to the very end, and we just didn’t get it done. We’ll learn a lot and hopefully take that with us to NCAA nationals and win some matches there.”

“I think the first couple of matches that tee off in match play are pretty important,” Manuel said. “That’s kind of how we did our lineup, having myself, Ben and Connor – the older guys – out first and try to get leads early. For me to get the first point for the team was important to give us a chance at the end. Going out first, I felt like I was able to go out there and grab a point for the guys. All week we played well, and just because we lost that match doesn’t mean we’re not going to have a good postseason. We’ll take a few days off and we will build on this experience to better prepare us for NCAAs.”
