Playoff Expansion to UF: “There would be life after losing to the Bulldogs”

Mecole Hardman

I must be misreading the tone of this article from the Gainesville Sun. It sounds as if the author is reassuring Gator fans that the expansion to twelve teams will be a great thing for Florida. Their expected annual loss in Jacksonville will not be quite as bitter with a kind of do-over coming courtesy of the 12-team playoff.

That means more meaningful games, more interest, and more reason for Gator fans to get out of bed the morning after losing to Georgia or vice versa.

The soonest an expanded field would kick in would be 2023, so let’s fast-forward to that fall.

Say the Gators are unbeaten heading into the Georgia game. The Bulldogs’ only defeat is a Week 2 loss at Oklahoma.

They beat Florida 31-28, but eventually lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. As in 2018, both teams get playoff invitations. The Gators finish 11-1 and their only loss is to a playoff team.

The way it is now, they’d be heading to a meaningless bowl. If the 12-team expansion is approved for 2023, they’d likely be headed to the playoffs.

There would be life after losing to the Bulldogs. That’s a game-changer Florida fans could probably get used to.
