There is a lot of hubbub about the class of 2019 wide receivers from Georgia, but the Peach State boasts some mighty fine receivers for the class of 2018 as well.

In alphabetical order by last name.

Trey Brown

Macon County High School, Montezuma, GA
6 foot 3 and 190 lbs

Brown has been a consistent producer and star for the Macon County Bulldogs for the last couple of seasons at receiver. He’s had back-to-back seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving with 49 receptions for 1,033 yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore and 53 receptions for 1,066 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior. Brown makes plays in big chunks as he averages over 20 yards per reception. The rising senior doesn’t have any major offers at the moment, but that could be in part on whether or not he decides to play football or basketball at the next level as he is also a talented forward. I haven’t watched him play hoops, but from what I’ve seen as a receiver, he has a future with the pigskin.

Malachi Carter

Mountain View High School, Lawrenceville, GA
6 foot 3 and 180 lbs

Carter had a solid junior season for Mountain View, hauling in 58 catches for 1,012 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. He’s another Peach State wideout that doesn’t have a lot of offers, but if he builds off his junior to turn in a solid senior campaign, I expect that to change. He has good size and athleticism who could be coached up to be a solid collegiate receiver. Carter has 3 offers so from Georgia Southern, GA State, and Rutgers.

Marquez Ezzard

Stockbridge High School, Stockbridge, GA
6 foot 1 and 195 lbs

Ezzard is a very talented athlete and football player that could play either side of the ball at wide receiver or defensive back at the college level, very much like Malcolm Mitchell or Jeremiah Holloman, but his talents really shines as a receiver. As a junior, he had 50 receptions for 1,015 yards and 12 touchdowns, and in three years of high school football, he has 129 catches for 2,279 yards and 25 receiving touchdowns. So far, Ezzard has over 24 offers including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, and UGA.

Jatavious Harris

Baldwin High School, Milledgeville, GA
6 foot 3, and 184 lbs

Harris is underrated as a receiver IMO, and that maybe because the major recruiting services have him pegged as an athlete, not sure if he will play at the next level as a defensive back or on offense as a wide receiver, not an uncommon theme with this group of receivers from the Peach State. He has all the physical traits and athletic ability to be an impact receiver, though. A long 6 foot 3 frame that he could add weight to and play at over 200 lbs. Then there is the speed. He has the type of home run threat speed that can stretch a defense. Plus, he is not only a weapon as a WR, but he has the potential to hurt opponents as a kick returner. Harris currently holds offers from Florida, Louisville, Miami, South Carolina, and Tennesse, but not from UGA as of yet. He did visit the Bulldogs for Georgia’s Junior Day back on February 18th.

Matthew Hill

Brookwood High School, Snellville, GA
6 foot 1.5 and 185 lbs

While he doesn’t have that elite 4.3 or even 4.4 speed, Hill is quick as a cat and just makes plays. He caught 41 balls for 849 yards and 9 touchdowns as a junior for Brookwood, and he also rushed for another 625 yards and 8 TDs. All that production in 2016 earned him a spot on the AJC First Team All-State for Class AAAAAAA. Hill is rated a consensus four-star prospect at wide receiver for 2018 by 247, ESPN, Rivals, and Scout, and he is considered one of the top 15 receivers in the country by both 247 and Rivals. Hill has 16 offers so far including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, FSU, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Kearis Jackson

Peach County High School, Fort Valley, GA
6 foot 0 and 194 lbs

Jackson is another talented athlete that could play either on defense in the secondary or on offense at wide receiver at the next level. His production from the WR position as his increased each year from his freshman season through his junior season, and he is poised to have a monster year in 2017 as a senior. In three years, Jackson has reeled in 114 catches for 1,656 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. He has also carried the ball 62 times on the ground for 468 yards and 7 rushing touchdowns. Jackson has had back-to-back seasons as a sophomore and junior with over 1,100 all-purpose yards.

Jackson is rated a four-star prospect at athlete by 247, ESPN, Rivals, and Scout and is considered a top 25 athlete for the class of 2018. He has 20 offers so far including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Georgia.

Sam James

Richmond Hill High School, Richmond Hill, GA
6 foot 1 and 160 lbs

James is a dynamic receiver and hard hitting playmaker at safety who is just fun to watch play. Tall and very athletic, but pencil thin, he’ll need to definitely add weight to his frame and build up his strength to compete at the college level. Regardless, he rips the ball out of the air and produces. James had 42 receptions for 917 yards and 8 receiving touchdowns as a junior. As a sophomore, he had 24 receptions for 516 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was named MaxPreps Player of the Year for both 2015 and 2016 as well.

James is rated a three-star prospect at receiver for 2018 by 247 and Rivals, and he currently has over a dozen offers including Colorado State, GT, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Clemson, Georgia, and Tennessee have yet to offer but have shown interest in the Richmond Hill wideout.

Steve Peterson

Harrison High School, Kennesaw, GA
6 foot 2 and 185 lbs

One reason for Justin Fields’ production as a passer, one of the top quarterbacks for 2018, is wide receiver Steve Peterson. As a junior, he caught a whopping 81 passes for 1,362 yards and 16 touchdowns. Peterson doesn’t have any major offers currently, but he reminds a heck of a lot of former Georgia split end Michael Bennett coming out of Alpharetta in the class of 2010. He’s a hard worker and maybe one of the best route runners out of the group.

Rory Starkey

Hapeville Charter Career Academy, College Park, GA
6 foot 1 and 195 lbs

Starkey may surprise some that he made my top-10 list, but if you get the chance to do so, go watch him play this fall. While he is raw as a route runner, he uses his athleticism and body control to box out defenders for access to the ball making him an asset in traffic and over the middle of the field. For his junior season, Starkey caught 46 balls for 762 yards and 6 touchdowns. He currently holds 3 offers from East Carolina, Illinois, Middle Tennessee, but I expect that list to grow as his academics are solid as well.

Josh Vann

Tucker High School, Tucker, GA
5 foot 11 and 180 lbs

It’s surprising to me that Josh Vann doesn’t have more offers. He currently has 9, including one from the University of Georgia as well as Alabama and Florida. All Vann did his junior season at Tucker was catch 63 passes for 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns, helping the Tigers to a 10-0 undefeated regular season record and all the way through the playoffs to the GHSA Class AAAAAA football State Championship in the Georgia Dome. His play earned him an AJC All-State honorable mention.

As with the running backs, it was tough to narrow this list down to 10 wide receivers; a task made even tougher to be honest because of the sheer number of quality wideouts across the Peach State. You’ll find a lot of good pass catchers out there from the north Georgia mountains down to the Atlanta-metro area all the way through the central and southern portions of the state to the gnats down near the border with Florida from class single-A all the way to the titanic class AAAAAAA programs. And as a former receiver myself, good look to you all this coming year. May the DBs you line up against eat your dust and your hands be like super glue and one with the pigskin.
