2022 Fall Camp Opening Day Practice Report

Here are some observations from opening day of Fall Camp Practice. The media were granted 15 minutes of restricted access to the outdoor practice fields while the Dawgs appeared to be doing position group drills.

  • Stetson Looks different- it’s not just the hair, but it looks like he’s been hitting the weight room a bit more this offseason. His arms looked noticeably bigger, and he seemed to perform well practicing with the 1’s.
  • Kamari Lassiter was taking second reps at outside corner after Kelee Ringo. After Lassiter was redshirt freshman Nyland Green and true freshman Daylen Everette.
  • Ladd McConkey was taking first-team reps in the wide receiver/quarterback drills over veteran Kearis Jackson. Jackson instead caught passes from Beck, and at third team were AD Mitchell and Brock Vandagriff.
  • While his athleticism appeared to be all the rave of the offseason, freshman Malaki Starks was buried in the depth chart during the safety drills. He sat a good 4 or 5 deep behind the likes of Chris Smith, Dan Jackson, William Poole and David Daniel-Sisavanh. He did manage to make a nice catch in an interception drill, though.
  • Tight ends were phenomenal, but taking first reps in a tight end drill wasn’t any of the big four you’re probably thinking of; it was Brett Seither. Proceeding him were Gilbert, Washington, and Delp.
  • Freshman Branson Robinson out of Mississippi looked strong out there. He was as advertised. At 5’10, 230, he looked like a small truck during his passing drills with quarterback, Jackson Muschamp.
  • Arik Gilbert looked slim. There were worries when he came back from his break with the team regarding his weight as he stood at a hefty 300 pounds, but as Coach Smart said, he’s done a spectacular job trimming down and getting back to playing weight. In a tight end drill, we could see some of his athleticism as he took two hits from pads and a hurdle during practice.
  • It was easy to see why Coach Uzo-Diribe was such a good grab for the Dawg’s coaching staff. He was high-energy and very vocal the entire time we were out there. Something that stood out was the fact that of his players, he seemed to chew out seniors Nolan Smith and Bobby Beal the most, holding them accountable as leaders of this defense.
  • In one linebacker drill, Nolan Smith took reps alongside sophomore Chazz Chambliss. This
  • Bear Alexander, who adorns Jordan Davis’ beloved “99,” looked fit out there. Offseason conditioning has definitely served him well. He came in a bit tubby in December, but the short time he’s had in that Georgia has made all the difference.
  • Freshman Christian Miller was seen wearing a black jersey (indicating injury) practicing by himself.
  • MJ Sherman and Marvin Jones, Jr. were getting checked up and having to redo a drill on the 2-man sled.
  • Amarius Mims coming off the ball high and getting called out for it.
  • Devin Willock (77) is huge.
  • Malaki Starks (24) has the speed and hip turn. Showed good hands in drill today.
  • Earnest Greene (71) is a big boy also. All the OLs were feeling the heat.
  • Jackson Muschamp (16) throwing some tight spirals
