The fourth-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team completed another perfect weekend in SEC play with a 4-2 win over LSU Sunday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

After two weeks of league matches, the Bulldogs (11-2) are alone in first place in the SEC with a 4-0 record.

Freshman Paul Oosterbaan provided his first career match clincher on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Andrew Korinek at No. 6. LSU (11-2, 2-2 SEC) won the doubles point, then Georgia won three straight singles matches to take a 3-1 lead before Oosterbaan eventually secured the Bulldogs’ fifth straight victory.

Said head coach Manuel Diaz: “LSU played a tremendous doubles match and it was the first doubles point that we’ve dropped in a long time. They just outplayed us. Our guys really came back in singles and asserted themselves. I thought we had tremendous wins at the top of the lineup. Paul, who is continuing to improve in every match, did a tremendous job in clinching the win for us.”

LSU won doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2, snapping Georgia’s streak of winning the doubles point in seven consecutive contests. Eric Perez and Tam Trinh beat Eric Diaz and Nathan Pasha 6-0, then at No. 1, the 10th-ranked pair of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland took their first loss of the season with a 6-2 setback to No. 57 Boris Arias and Jordan Daigle.

Georgia responded in singles with a pair of quick wins at Nos. 1 and 2. No. 25 Smith topped No. 64 Daigle, 6-1, 6-1, then No. 17 Montgomery beat No. 98 Chris Simpson, 6-2, 6-2 to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Pasha made it 3-1 with his seventh consecutive win at No. 3, and LSU cut the lead to 3-2 with a win at No. 4 by Justin Butsch. Oosterbaan then won at No. 6, and Nick Wood led 7-6(5), 4-2 when the match was clinched.

For Oosterbaan it was his fourth consecutive win, and he improved to 3-0 in SEC matches.

The Bulldogs will be back on the road next week when they travel to Tennessee for a 1 p.m. match on Thursday followed by Kentucky Saturday at 4 p.m. Georgia’s next home match will be March 19 vs. East Tennessee State.
