Georgia seniors Austin Smith and Ben Wagland are ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles according to the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Preseason Rankings released Tuesday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] In singles, sophomore Wayne Montgomery is the highest ranked Bulldog at No. 16, followed by Smith at No. 17, Nick Wood at No. 104 and Wagland at No. 111. Georgia joins Oklahoma, Virginia and TCU as the only schools with two singles players in the top-20.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith and Wagland finished last season with an 18-4 doubles record, including a 16-3 mark against ranked opponents. The pair recorded eight wins against doubles teams ranked in the top-20 and three in the top-five. They ended the season ranked No. 2 and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship as the No. 1 overall seed.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Montgomery was the 2015 SEC Freshman of the Year and had a final singles ranking of No. 26 last season, which was highest on the team. He was also named first team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman and led team with 32 singles wins and was second with a combined 51 singles and doubles victories.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith was also a first team All-SEC pick in 2015 and earned a spot on the SEC All-Tournament Team. He ended the year with a 27-11 singles record and a No. 27 national singles ranking. The senior from Cumming, Ga., was 8-1 in the SEC, which was tied for the team lead in league wins.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native won 29 singles matches and was 6-2 in SEC contests. Wagland racked up 20 singles wins and entered the NCAA Tournament on a nine-match winning streak.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Selections for the ITA All-American Championships scheduled for Oct. 3-12 were also announced, and Smith and Montgomery received bids to the main draw, while Wagland, Wood and Walker Duncan will begin play in the qualifying draw.
