The No. 8 Georgia Gymdogs host the Crimson Tide of Alabama for a Sunday afternoon SEC gymnastics showdown in Stegeman Coliseum at 2:00 p.m. ET. Both Georgia and Alabama are historic programs nationally and have combined for 16 team national championships, 10 by UGA and 6 by Bama, and 24 SEC titles, 16 by UGA and 8 by Bama.
“Collegiate gymnastics as a whole owes a huge debt of gratitude to Suzanne Yoculan and Sarah Patterson and the rivalry that they built,” said Georgia gymnastics head coach Danna Durante. “We’re excited for this meet on Sunday and the electricity that this rivalry brings throughout the arena.”
Georgia will be competing at home for the first time since Feb. 3, fresh off a three-meet road trip that featured the team’s top scores this season away from Stegeman Coliseum. The Gymdogs have relied heavily on beam and floor of late, with the two events producing a combined average of 98.608 points over the road trip.
That improvement comes partially due to consistently strong performance from senior Ashlyn Broussard and junior Vivi Babalis on beam as well as junior Gigi Marino on floor. Broussard has connected for a 9.95 and 9.9 over the last two meets on beam while Babalis has added 9.9, 9.875 and 9.875 on the apparatus over the road trip.
Marino, on pace to finish her career as Georgia’s all-time leader on floor, has hit consecutive 9.95s on floor.
The meet will be broadcast to a national TV audience on the SEC Network, with veteran voice Holly Rowe handling play-by-play duties and former Gymdog Courtney Kupets Carter adding analysis. Rutgers alum Lauren Sisler will add reporting during the meet as well.
Home Sweet Home
With Georgia’s return to competition in Stegeman Coliseum, the team looks to continue its dominant home performance that it showed throughout January and the first meet in February.
The Gymdogs set 27 career highs in the team’s 4-0 stretch, including seven from Rachel Dickson and six from Morgan Reynolds. Additionally, Georgia won 18 of 20 possible event titles in that stretch while averaging north of 9,300 fans per meet.
