The Georgia women’s tennis team inched closer to the top as they moved up one spot to No. 2 in Tuesday’s release of the latest ITA/Oracle Team Rankings.

In Georgia’s single match this past weekend; the Bulldogs (14-3, 8-1 SEC) earned their seventh shutout of the season and second in a row with a 4-0 outcome at No. 23 Tennessee.

The Bulldogs hopped over Ohio State (19-2, 4-0 Big 10) but still trail Florida (18-1, 8-1 SEC) for the No. 1 position. The Gators’ lone loss came by the hands of the Bulldogs in March; however, Florida beat Georgia in the ITA Team Indoors in February.

The ITA Singles Rankings include five Bulldogs: Elena Christofi (No. 11), Ellen Perez (No. 28), Kennedy Shaffer (No. 64), Caroline Brinson (No. 66), and Mariana Gould (No. 112). North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila (No. 6) and UCLA’s Ena Shibahara (No. 2) represent the only freshman that are ranked higher than Christofi, a native of Athens, Greece. Perez, Gould and Brinson notched the singles victories to finish off Tennessee.

Two Bulldogs’ doubles teams rate in the ITA Doubles Rankings. The duo of Brinson and Perez, who have been playing on court one for Georgia, slide to 20th from 18th. On the second court, Christofi/Shaffer remained at No. 28 after their latest match unfinished. Against the Volunteers, Brinson and Perez clinched the doubles point, which marked the eighth consecutive match Georgia captured the doubles point.

Georgia travels to Fayetteville, Ark. to play No. 19 Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m., and then continue to Columbia, Mo. to take on No. 46 Missouri Sunday at 2 p.m.

Eleven Southeastern Conference teams fall inside the top-25 of the ITA Division I Women’s Collegiate Team Rankings. For complete rankings, go to itatennis.com.
