Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart informed reporters on Monday’s SEC Football Spring Media Teleconference that Trenton Thompson is set to return to UGA this summer.
“Trenton’s done a great job rehabbing. His shoulder is much better. He is able move a lot better now than he was before. Medically, he has done really well,” Kirby Smart said. “He is there in May. He is not currently enrolled in Maymester but not many of our kids are. He is going to continue to rehab his shoulder and will be enrolled in summer school.”
The Bulldogs junior defensive lineman withdrew from classes back in February to deal with an undisclosed medical condition he is undergoing treatment for. Although Thompson, or ‘Jolly’ to his teammates, was not able to participate in spring practice, he remained in Athens and around the coaches and team attending UGA’s Pro-Day to support his teammates as well as on the sidelines at practice as an observer, and he hung out with the Red Team during Georgia’s G-Day spring football game.

‘Jolly’ was a 5-star prospect defensive lineman out of Westover High School for Georgia’s 2015 college football recruiting class. In two seasons with the Bulldogs’ football team, the talented Albany native has played in 25 games tallying 89 tackles, 12 for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. Thompson had a breakout sophomore campaign this past season and led Georgia in tackles for a loss with 9.5, and he was also named MVP of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in December after recording 3 sacks, 8 tackles, and 3.5 tackles for loss against TCU in Georgia’s 31-23 victory.
Headed into the 2017 season, Thompson is expected to be an anchor and impact player in the front seven of Georgia’s defense on the d-line. Regardless of whether or not Thompson is ready to start the first game of the season versus Appalachian State this fall or how many tackles or sacks he racks up this season, it is good to hear that the big man is doing better and getting back in school.
