Caliya Robinson, one of the Southeastern Conference’s top returning scorers, rebounders, and shot-blockers, was named to the 2017 Preseason All-SEC Second Team in a vote by league coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.
The Marietta, Ga., native is entering her junior season and is among the SEC’s best in several statistical categories. She ranks in the top-10 of the SEC’s returning scorers and rebounders and finished the 2016-17 season ranked third in the conference with 69 total blocks.
“Caliya’s numbers speak for themselves,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “To rank in the top-10 in scoring and rebounding in this league is a huge accomplishment. What we have talked to Caliya about this season is being consistent. She has worked extremely hard since the end of last year to do that, and you can see the growth and maturity she is now displaying. I am excited for her and look forward to watching her develop and push herself, even more, this year.”
Robinson enters the 2017-18 campaign looking to build on a strong finish to her sophomore season when she averaged close to 16 points and over eight rebounds per game over the last 10 contests. Perhaps her best stretch of games came when she earned ESPNW’s prestigious National Player of the Week honor after scoring 20 at Arkansas and 28 in a double-overtime win against Tennessee.
Wednesday’s announcement represents the latest honor in Robinson’s already impressive career. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2016 and the SEC All-Defensive Team in 2017.
Robinson and the Lady Bulldogs tip off the upcoming season on Sunday, Nov. 12 against Wofford in the newly-renovated Stegeman Coliseum. Tickets can be purchased in advance by CLICKING HERE or by calling the UGA Athletic Association Ticket Office at 877-542-1231.
