Coming off the first national championship seasons for both the Georgia women indoors and the men outdoors, Bulldog track and field head coach Petros Kyprianou will be back to work at next week’s Thorpe Cup and the coming European Championships.
Kyprianou, who recently completed his third year as UGA’s head coach and 10th overall with the program, will make the short trip to Knoxville, Tenn., next week to be an assistant for Team USA at the Thorpe Cub. The Thorpe Cup is an annual international competition between seven decathletes and seven heptathletes from both America and Germany. While he is an assistant for the American team this summer, he will be Team USA’s head coach in 2019 when the competition moves back to Germany.
Last time he was on Tennessee’s campus, his Georgia teams left with nine individual Southeastern Conference titles, a collegiate record, three meet records and the Commissioner’s Trophy on the men’s side after junior Denzel Comenentia tallied 23 points on his own.
Kyprianou returns to the road when the European Championships arrives in Berlin, Germany, on Aug. 7-12. After working on the Estonian national team’s staff during the 2016 Olympics, Kyprianou will be the nation’s main coach for the coming meet. Former Bulldog Maicel Uibo, current decathlete Johannes Erm and future Georgia combined event competitor Karel Tilga are all slated to compete in the decathlon for Estonia at the Championships.
In addition, Comenentia (Netherlands) has plans to compete in the hammer throw and rising junior Louisa Grauvogel (Germany) will battle in the heptathlon at the European Championships before returning to Athens for the fall semester.
Kyprianou is coming off the most sensational year in Georgia track and field history. The Lady Bulldogs ran away with the 2018 NCAA indoor crown and were then the national outdoor runner-up by a single point, giving them two second-place finishes in a row at outdoor Nationals. The Bulldog men finished a record-breaking third at the NCAA indoor meet before collecting a resounding victory at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
