Georgia continued fall camp on Tuesday after it held a closed practice on Monday. The intensity continued to be high as choice words floated all over the fields and kept the players in check. Tuesday marked day 10 of fall camp, and the Georgia heat continued to test the players. Steve Conyers and I break down each side of the ball and give you our takeaways.
Savannah’s Offense Report
There were no injuries on the offensive front. Another thing to note is that no matter what the team did as a whole, coach Jim Chaney and company didn’t think it was good enough. It appeared to be one of those days where regardless of what went right or not the team needed a good lecture or ten.
Quarterbacks:
Both Jake Fromm and Justin Fields participated in Wild Dawg drills at the beginning of the media period. Fields worked in some formations that allowed him to tuck the ball and run versus just handing it off. Then one of the backs would toss to him. From what I gather this is what Fields might work some in the wild dawg formation this season. However, I cannot confirm that at this time.
Both Fromm and Fields looked crisp today on the field. Fields made a beautiful throw to John Fitzpatrick that just seemed so natural. Fromm had a good day as well. No new news is good news in this sense. The competition is fierce between the two of them. However, I think Fromm’s experience gives him the final upper hand as we’re 17 days out from game one.
Offensive Line:
The offensive line had a new face in the first rotation. True-freshman, Cade Mays took some reps at left guard with the first team while usual first-team left guard, Kendall Baker took reps at second-team left tackle. Trey Hill took some reps at the second team center position as well. Other than that the ones and two’s appeared the same. Also, the group continued working on fundamentals and a lot of technical stuff. Sam Pittman appears to be teaching away and making sure this offensive line is as sound and stout as they come.Running backs:
The group worked with the wild dawg some and then moved to agility and ball handling drills. James Cook and Elijah Holyfield each took reps with the wild dawg formation. Zamir White continues to make strides and shows absolutely no sign of injury. He appears to be getting in better shape and keeping up with D’Andre Swift and company.Wide Receivers:
The wideouts dropped some passes today, but the passes were not the best by the latter of the quarterbacks. Demetrius Robertson seems to be getting into better shape. Matt Landers continues to make strides daily and just impresses me he did miss one ball, but it was just a wild pass made by Mason Wood. Tommy Bush didn’t have any drops today. Ahkil Crumpton has a set of hands on him, boy he can’t miss a pass if he can reach it or run it down. He’s a heck of an athlete and I cannot wait to see him with a bigger role this season. JJ Holloman is a thick-bodied receiver and just looks so smooth. Another gazelle in the making, it’s possible if he can stay healthy and put it all together.
Tight ends:
Fitzpatrick is a MONSTER! Him and Luke Ford next to each other look like offensive linemen who lost all the weight after football. However, these two are some of the most athletic and impressive freshmen I’ve laid eyes on. Both of them pick up on blocking so well and quickly.
However, today wasn’t the case for the entire tight end unit. Coach Jim Chaney made it a point to tell them all, “You ain’t fat! Don’t be hobbling or hopping around!!” No matter how good it looked to me or the other media people, Chaney complained about them as a unit. Tough love seems to be Chaney’s way and the entire staffs’ way.
Steve’s Defense Report:
Quick Injury update on the defense:
-Tyrique McGhee was not at practice because of an apparent foot injury. The word is he will be out 4-6 weeks but we don’t actually know the specifics. We get to talk to Kirby Wednesday so he should clear things up.
-Divaad Wilson was still working with trainers on the side and is getting comfortable with his knee.
-Azeez Ojulari still has a knee brace on but is starting to look better every day. I do think he will be a contributor on special teams this season.
