Georgia Football Monday Practice Report: Auburn Week

Jake Fromm (11)

Georgia started preparations for Auburn Monday afternoon. The intensity was up, and the team seemed fired up to face the Tigers. Despite the intensity,  the weather had a somber feel to it, and with the new time change, it got dark and fast. Steve and I give our takeaways from Monday’s practice.

Savannah’s Offense Report

— Jake Fromm was fired up during practice letting out a big “WOOOO” after finishing a rep during a drill. It’s good to see him showing a lot of emotion. Rick Flair may have some competition in the woo area.

— He appeared to be limping, but then took off jogging and showed no sign of injury. Fromm did have a wrap on his right knee, but whatever it is doesn’t seem too serious.

— Lamont Gaillard was out at practice running through drills. He did seem limited like Kirby Smart said he would be, but he was barely limping when I watched him. Despite him being limited, having him out there is an excellent sign that he will likely play on Saturday.

— Trey Hill did work with first string, and Gaillard helped him with some stuff during a few of the drills. Jamaree Salyer appeared to be the second-team center.

— Georgia had players from the offense and defense run through various formations showing what each side will likely see this Saturday.

— Jim Chaney worked his tight ends on live blocking. He gave John Fitzpatrick who wore #68 today some advice, “Keep your elbows in Johnny.” While watching this group, they worked on maintaining a block in pass protection, and Isaac Nauta rocked Azeez Ojulari who had on a # 3 jersey and knocked him on his butt. When he did this Luke Ford jumped up and down and patted Nauta on the head, and the group let out an, “ooooh.”

— Ford got a compliment himself from Chaney as he told the freshman tight end, “Nice Luke! Way to be patient!”

— The quarterbacks and wideouts worked through their usual pass routes, but I did notice that James Coley gave each QB an assignment, whether it was to the inside guy or the outside guy and told them who to throw to. Both  Fromm and Justin Fields threw accurate throws, and their wideouts made some nice catches.

— Georgia’s running backs worked on catching passes out of the backfield and some ball protection.

Steve’s Defense Report

Kirby Smart
Kirby Smart

— DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle (undisclosed) still absent from practice

— David Marshall (foot) also absent from practice.  His return timetable uncertain at this point.

— Michail Carter was back practicing with the defensive line.

— Buffalo Bills in attendance today watching the defense

— Kirby continuously yelled at Mel Tucker and the drill the defensive backs were running. He wanted them working on back shoulder throws and practice turning their eyes to the ball, so they don’t draw pass interference. He specifically targeted out Tyson Campbell saying,” That ain’t it! That ain’t it! Run what he’s getting killed on!

— Netori Johnson wearing #5 still working with defensive line. This number change is likely due to him probably playing Derrick Brown’s role in scout team drills.
