Georgia men’s tennis freshman Philip Henning, who has won five-straight singles matches and is 7-2 overall in doubles this season, has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.

The Bloemfontein, South Africa, native went a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles last week to earn the honor.

Against No. 15 Tennessee on Friday, he clinched the match with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2) win against the Vols’ Preston Touliatos at court No. 4. That victory came after he teamed with fellow Bulldog rookie Trent Bryde to clinch the doubles point and give Georgia an early 1-0 lead.

On Sunday against No. 3 Texas, Henning ousted 59th-ranked Harrison Scott, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 for his fifth-straight win of the year. It also gave him his second victory against a ranked opponent this season.

Henning is 9-3 overall this year in singles matches and is part of a Georgia freshman class that has compiled 29 victories dating back to the fall. He and Bryde are currently 3-0 in doubles, playing at both the second and third positions.

This week, Henning and the Bulldogs travel to No. 28 Texas A&M to face the Aggies at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on Thursday. They then host 24th-ranked LSU on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
