At 21-3 overall, Georgia is off to its best start since 2009 when that club had an identical record after 24 games. However, this year’s squad is 5-1 in the SEC which is tied with Arkansas and Texas A&M for the best record in the league. The 2009 squad was 4-2 after its first two SEC series. Georgia’s pitching staff ranks fifth nationally with a 2.54 ERA. In the series win over No. 10 LSU, the starting trio of sophomore Emerson Hancock (5-1 0.59 ERA), sophomore C.J. Smith (2-0, 2.05 ERA) and junior Tony Locey (4-0, 2.10 ERA) combined for 19.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs. Georgia’s sterling defensive play continued as the Bulldogs posted a perfect fielding percentage in the series win over the Tigers. In SEC play, Georgia has made just one error for a .995 fielding percentage.
Georgia has moved up to a season-best No. 4 ranking in the D1Baseball.com top 25 poll. It’s the highest ranking for the Bulldogs since checking in at No. 1 for five weeks during the 2009 season. The Bulldogs are batting .290 with a .406 on base percentage, a 2.54 ERA and a .982 fielding percentage (tied 4th nationally).
Tech is 16-8 overall including winning a road series over then No. 4 Louisville this past weekend. Game two of the Tech series will be April 9 in Athens and the final game will be at SunTrust Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, on April 23 to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The Bulldogs have swept Tech the past two years for a six-game winning streak in the series, the longest stretch since a six-game streak in 1985-86. Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin is 10-4 against Tech during his Bulldog tenure.
Georgia junior Tim Elliott (3-1, 0.39 ERA) gets the start Tuesday. This will be Elliott’s ninth career start, and he’s 4-1 with a 1.50 ERA as a starter. His lone loss came 1-0 to LIU Brooklyn on an unearned run on Feb. 26. The past two weeks, he’s beaten Ga. State in midweek action. Tech will counter with junior Amos Willingham (3-0, 3.38 ERA). Tech claimed a road series over No. 4 Louisville this past weekend. They are batting .288 as a team with a .386
