MTennis: UGA Wins 2 Sunday

Jan Zielinski

The Georgia men’s tennis team completed a successful weekend with wins against Auburn and Kennesaw State in a Sunday twin bill at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs ran past Auburn, 4-1, before earning a 6-0 victory against Kennesaw State. Georgia (10-8, 5-4 SEC) has won three matches in a row and has a week off before hosting Arkansas on Senior Day this Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m.

“It has been a gradual process for us, and we were able to play some really great tennis this weekend,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “Jan has played well. Doubles has been a huge improvement, and our freshmen are doing a really nice job. I am proud for Blake how he has stepped into the lineup and performed at a high level. I am seeing a lot of great things from our whole team.”

Against Auburn, each of the three doubles courts went into tiebreakers as Georgia held on at courts two and three to earn the point.

On court No. 3, the freshman combo of Trent Bryde and Blake Croyder went up 3-0 early in the match before Auburn stormed back to force the tiebreaker. In the deciding frame, the Bulldog rookie duo started strong and never looked back en route to a 7-6 (3) win against the Tiger pair of Anders Fry and Diego Chavarria.

Robert Loeb

After Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski saw their 4-1 lead disappear into a 7-6 (3) loss to Tad Maclean and Brandon Laubser, Georgia’s tandem of Walker Duncan and Emil Reinberg sealed the point with a 7-6 (2) win at court No. 2.

In singles against the Tigers, Croyder won his second match in three days after earning a spot in the lineup due to the injury to Philip Henning. Up 2-0, the Bulldogs split the next two courts with Reinberg falling, 6-2, 6-4, and Loeb taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

That left it up to Zielinski to finish off the Tigers. After winning the first set against Matteo Devincentis, Zielinski found himself down 6-3 in the second-set tiebreaker. The Warsaw, Poland came rolling back and clinched the match with a 10-8 victory.

Georgia took a little over an hour break before facing Kennesaw State in its second match of the day.

The two teams decided to play singles first, and the Bulldogs made quick work of the Owls. Georgia took wins at all six singles courts to pick up the victory.
