Georgia held its second scrimmage of the 2019 season today, and it was another scorcher. The Bulldawg Illustrated crew was present and accounted for. Greg was shooting photos, make sure to check out his practice gallery above, Bob scouted out the defense, and I watched the offense. Here are some notes from UGA’s practice number 14.

DEFENSE

Outside linebackers

Student assistant Jarvis Jones was putting the OLBs through drills and warmups.  Adam Anderson (19), Robert Beal Jr. (33), Matthew Brown (24, walk-on), Walter Grant (84), Jermaine Johnson (11), Azeez Ojulari (13),  and Nolan Smith (4) all were present and accounted for.

Inside linebackers

Coach Glenn Schumann was working his ILBs through a thud drill. Junior Nate McBride (22) was back working with the ILBs with no apparent restrictions. He’s been back since Tuesday. Also taking part in the drill were Tae Crowder (30), Rian Davis (12), Trezman Marshall (15), Monty Rice (32), Channing Tindall (41), and Quay Walker (25). Notably absent during the media viewing period was freshman Nakobe Dean (17).

Update: Kirby Smart stated in his post-practice presser that Dean was banged up and that he would be fine.

“Nakobe [Dean] is banged up. He was not able to scrimmage today,” said Kirby Smart. “But he is going to be fine.”

Defensive Backs

Junior transfer DB D.J. Daniel was getting first-team reps alongside Eric Stokes Jr. Tyson Campbell was working getting second-team reps.

OFFENSE

Running Backs

The running backs were catching screen passes during individual drills –Zamir White and D’Andre Swift were splitting first-team reps. Brian Herrien looked completely healthy as he was running second-team behind White and Swift.

Offensive Line

Junior o-lineman Ben Cleveland was working at first-team right guard, and Cade Mays was behind him in the rotation.

Quarterbacks

Junior QB Jake Fromm connected several of his passes. Completions were thrown to wide receivers Jaylen Johnson (81), Tyler Simmons (87), and Kearis Jackson (10).

Stetson Bennett looked sharp as he hit freshman wideout George Pickens several times on post routes.

Start of 7-on-7

As we walked out of Sanford, we were able to catch the start of 7-on-7. A group with D’Wan Mathis (2) at QB got the 7-on-7 kicked off. Mathis completed two straight passes. The first was to redshirt freshman TE Ryland Goede (88), and the second was to walk-on redshirt freshman wide receiver Jaylen Johnson (81). On Mathis’ third pass, he overthrew Goede for an incompletion in the endzone.

Closing Thoughts

With the kickoff against Vanderbilt to open the 2019 season just two weeks away, the Bulldawgs have shaken off the rust of Fall Camp and are headlong into the grind of practice.
