Bulldog running back D’Andre Swift discussed Georgia offensive coordinator Jame Coley, the offensive line’s performance versus South Carolina, lack of scoring points, the mood of the team, and more during his interview on Monday as UGA prepares for their homecoming game against Kentucky this coming weekend.

Swift was asked if players communicate with offensive coordinator James Coley regarding the offense, and he said that the players do so during the week but during the game, they communicate with their position coaches.

“Personally, I communicate with Coach (Dell) McGee and Coach (Sam) Pittman. Coach Coley is upstairs and talks to Jake (Fromm) the most. Jake trickles it down to the other offensive players, but we don’t talk to Coach Coley during the game“

During the week?

“Yeah. We ask him what types of things he’s thinking of doing. It looks good in practice but we’re not playing against another opponent in practice so it’s hard to get that type of look.”

And when it comes to the offense, for Swift, the most frustrating part about the South Carolina loss was the offense not putting more points on the board.

“Just not putting points on the board. I mean, the defense did a hell of a job. You can’t ask the defense to do. I think they held them to 10 points, I think, something like that. Offensively, we can’t score, we can’t win.”

Swift thinks that Georgia has the potential to be one of the best offensive teams in the country and one solution might be to play faster in practice.

“We should be one of the best teams in the country in every aspect. I think we need to do a better job of playing faster in practice and hopefully see that trickle down to Saturday.”

What is the reason for the lack of explosive run plays? 

“I think more teams are loading the box, kind of taking away the run and make Jake Fromm beat them and I think Jake is going to do that.”

And Swift shared that he did not think the Dawgs were explosive in the run game against South Carolina. Was Saturday an efficient day on the ground?

“No, not at all. No explosive plays. No explosive runs, really. There’s a lot that goes into that.”

But Swift had an answer on how the offense could be more explosive.

“I think we need to take more shots downfield. Try to get the ball to our playmakers in space. Whatever the coaches think that is, think that might be, I think we need to do a better job of it.”

Swift was quick to point out that being more explosive doesn’t mean Georgia should try to be like teams who run 80-plus plays per game.

“…We’re not them. They’re not us. So however we decide to go about the game plan and try to win the game, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Going forward and headed into the Kentucky game this weekend, Swift’s message to his offensive line was to “keep their heads up.”

“Keep their heads up. Tell them we love them. Just got to play harder, everybody does. Everybody on our team just has to look in the mirror and do a better job of doing their job.”
