Georgia’s defense held the Auburn Tigers’ offense scoreless for about almost three and a half quarters Saturday before Gus Mahlzahn’s unit scored twice in the final ten minutes of the game.

However, it wasn’t enough as the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 21-14 on their home turf in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“We were down 21-0 and it didn’t look good, and we fought back and really had some chances,” said Malzahn at his postgame press conference. “Our guys fought their guts out, they fought their guts out for Auburn, and we’ve got some hurt guys in that locker room, Give Georgia credit, they have a very talented defense and we knew that coming in.”

Freshman quarterback Bo Nix threw the ball 50 times completing 30 of his passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. Nix connected with receiver Eli Stove with about ten minutes to go to put the Tigers on the board. On the very next drive, Nix led the offense down the field and scored on a rushing touchdown near the goal line, That was Georgia’s first rushing touchdown they’ve given up all year.

On Auburn’s last play of the game freshman defensive lineman Travon Walker came up with a huge sack on fourth down that solidified Georgia’s win. He lined up and Nix dropped back into the pocket as Walker broke off free on a stunt, and made the hit. Walker silenced the Auburn faithful after he made the hit. Coming off the field Walker and head coach Kirby Smart greeted each other with a chest bump. Smart hit Walker hard, and about tore his ACL on the way down.

“We’ve got to find more ways to play the guy,” Smart said. “He’s probably one of our better overall football players. … He’s talented and extremely athletic.”

It wasn’t Georgia’s prettiest game offensively, but the defense helped the job done in the end.

“We didn’t play perfect, so it’s kind of upsetting. But you can’t be too upset when you win,” said senior safety J.R. Reed.

Georgia returns to action next Saturday in their final home game of the season as the Texas A&M Aggies come to town for a showdown at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
