Dawgs Offense leans on Defense… again

Dawgs lost the Success Rate battle but survived with key stops and winning the turnover battle. In fact, the Dawgs haven’t turned the ball over since the Carolina game. Here is the advance stats from @ESPN_BillC. Not real pretty.

UGA 35% Rush SR and 32% Pass SR. This is the sixth straight game that UGA has been under 40% SR. The Dawgs’ defense have held opponents to similar success rates, but the fans are restless for some explosive plays and more points.

SEC Stat Cat had several tweets today about UGA. And, they gave Dawgs fans the metrics they needed to back up the offensive anxiety.

The Dawgs clearly are determined to run the ball up the middle. But, 1.8 yards before contact is brutal. Yet, the Dawgs did have some successful runs up the middle on some inside runs.

Both inside zones, the first play (UGA’s 5th play of the game) was taken outside. The next play was a great run, to the right, which is where the Dawgs ran with more success.

@SEC_StatCat tweeted prior to the game that UGA’s most success run was a “Nakie Read” which UGA has run 14 times for 11.1 YPA. You can see the plays I found in the comments.

UGA ran this play twice for success against the Aggies.

When you win a game by one score and your opponents have a better offense, every successful play is vital. The last “Nakie Read” was the clincher for the Dawgs. This play worked these two times, but Coley also dialed it up on 2nd and 26 for a 6 yard gain. A sign that he sees the need to get our backs in space. Dawgs have run it 14 times this season but ran it 3 times against A&M.

A&M has a solid defense, but the Dawgs still must improve. Signs are there that UGA can be better.
