Olympics: Gunnar Bentz Advances to 200m Butterfly Final
With a personal-best time of 1:55.28 in the semifinals, University of Georgia swimming alum Gunnar Bentz advanced to the men’s 200-meter butterfly final during the third day of swimming competition at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games Monday evening at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Bentz, who became the first male Georgia swimmer to win a gold medal five years ago in Rio, separated himself from a crowded field in the second semifinal heat and placed sixth overall. Earlier in the morning, he finished 11th overall in the preliminary round with a time of 1:55.46. Bentz will compete in the 200 fly final tomorrow evening in Tokyo, with the race scheduled to begin at 9:49 p.m. EDT.
In the women’s 200-meter freestyle semifinals, fellow alum Allison Schmitt narrowly missed out on reaching her third Olympic 200 free final, finishing 10th with a time of 1:56.80. In prelims, Schmitt placed 12th with a time of 1:57.10.
The Olympic swimming competition continues Tuesday morning with a pair of Bulldog alums taking to the water. Following a bronze medal in the women’s 400-meter individual medley, Hali Flickinger will swim in the 200-meter butterfly prelims at 6:26 a.m.
Later in the session, Nic Fink will make his Olympic debut in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke prelims at 6:48 a.m. Fink will be joined by fellow Athens Bulldog Swim Club pro swimmer Andrew Wilson, who placed sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke final Sunday evening. If Flickinger, Fink, or Wilson advance, they will compete in semifinal races Tuesday evening beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sports writer and football official. The Maxwell Award watch list will once again incorporate a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast, and will feature fresh faces, as 2020 winner DeVonta Smith (Alabama) and finalists Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) and Mac Jones (Alabama) have all moved on to the NFL. 2020: Played extensively in all 10 of the Bulldogs’ games…first starting assignment of the season in win over Tennessee…finished with 22 total stops and 20 QB pressures…credited with a career-best six tackles at Arkansas, including 1.5 stops for 14 lost yards…also had four QB pressures vs. the Razorbacks…had three stops and a pair of QB hurries in win over Auburn…four tackles and a QB pressure vs. Alabama…had three tackles in win at Missouri, including the Bulldogs’ lone QB sack of the game.
2019: Co-winner of Defensive Newcomer of the Year, given at team’s post-season awards gala…played in all 14 games and finished with 18 total stops, including 2.5 sacks for 19 lost yards…also had 15 QB pressures, fourth-best on the team…three tackles and a QB pressure vs. Georgia Tech…two stops vs. Missouri included a QB sack for a 9-yard loss…had 1.5 sacks vs. Murray State…enrolled at UGA in January and participated in Spring drills.
