Baseball: Charlie Condon has been invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team summer training camp

Condon, a 6-6, 215-pound native of Marietta, Ga., will compete for a spot on the final 26-man USA CNT roster. The camp will feature 56 of the premier non-draft eligible college players. They will play a four-game Stars versus Stripes intrasquad series in Cary, N.C. from June 25-28 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The training camp series begins on June 25 at 3 p.m. ET. Game two will be on June 26 at 6 p.m. ET, game three on June 27 at 7 p.m. ET, and game four on June 28 at 6 p.m. ET. 
Condon, who has been named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy, was named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball earlier this week. He was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches. He captured the Triple Crown for the Bulldogs, batting .386 with 25 home runs and 67 RBI. He set the SEC freshman home run record and ranked among the league’s offensive leaders throughout the regular season. He was named second-team All-SEC and Freshman All-SEC. He started all 56 games with 29 starts at first base, 21 in right field, and six in left field. He posted a .992 fielding percentage. During the season, he had a 37-game on-base streak, a 24-game hitting streak and registered at least one home run in every SEC series. He is scheduled to play for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores in the Cape Cod Summer League with the season opener on June 10.
USA Baseball will select the final roster after the training camp series. The CNT will compete from June 30-July 12 with friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Japan.

MTennis: Drake Bernstein announces Jarryd Chaplin has been named associate head coach

Jarryd Chaplin has been named associate head coach for the Georgia women’s tennis team, head coach Drake Bernstein announced Friday.

“We’re excited about the addition of Jarryd to our staff and his extensive experience in the Southeastern Conference as a student-athlete and a coach,” said Bernstein. “Jarryd brings incredible passion for the game and will be an excellent mentor to our current and future student-athletes. He has learned under great coaches and been a part of programs with high standards and character. He has a proven record of player development, and we’re looking forward to him working with our program and welcoming him to Athens and the University of Georgia.”

Chaplin recently completed his fourth season with the University of Tennessee women’s tennis program where he was an associate head coach on Alison Ojeda’s staff. UT has posted top-25 finishes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings the past four seasons. This past year, UT tallied a program-record 11 SEC wins during the regular season. In 2023, UT finished with a No. 14 ranking after going 21-6 and advancing to the round of 16 of the NCAA Championships.

A former standout for the Volunteers men’s tennis team, Chaplin returned to Knoxville in July of 2019 to continue his coaching career. He received the 2021 TA Ohio Valley Region Assistant Coach of the Year Award. In June of 2021, he was promoted to associate head coach.

Chaplin began his collegiate coaching career at Vanderbilt during the 2017-18 campaign where he served as a volunteer assistant on the men’s team. The following year, he worked as an assistant with the Vanderbilt women’s tennis program before returning to UT.

A native of Sydney, Australia, the 31-year-old Chaplin competed for the Volunteers from 2011-14. He compiled a 74-44 record in doubles and a 64-55 singles record. He earned second team All-SEC honors in 2013. A three-time Academic All-SEC selection and ITA Scholar-Athlete, he received a degree in business administration. Also, he was a two-time member of the SEC Community Service Team. Chaplin spent time on the professional circuit where he achieved an ATP doubles career-high ranking of No. 155.

WBB: Katrina McClain has been selected to the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2023

McClain is one of 12 members of this year’s class that will be enshrined on Aug. 23 at a ceremony in Manila ahead of the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup.

Winner of Olympic gold medals in 1988 and 1996, McClain also captured FIBA World Championship gold medals in 1986 and 1990, Goodwill Games gold in 1986 and 1990, a Pan American Games title in 1987 and the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival gold. 

McClain competed on 13 USA Basketball teams and tallied an impressive overall career record of 118-5 (.959), winning eight gold, one silver and three bronze medals. 

The 6-foot-2 forward/center from Charleston, S.C., first earned national acclaim as a standout at St. Andrews High School, where she was a three-time all-state performer. McClain led St. Andrews to a 30-0 record and a state championship as a senior and also led the South Carolina Junior Olympic team to the 1982 national championship.

During her four seasons at Georgia from 1983-84 to 1986-87, McClain helped the Lady Bulldogs compile a 116-15 record while finishing as NCAA runner-up in 1985 and SEC Champions in 1984 and 1986. McClain was a consensus All-America selection in both 1986 and 1987 and became Georgia’s first National Player of the Year honoree as a senior. She also was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 1984 and SEC Player of the Year in 1987.

McClain owns Georgia’s career field goal percentage record, connecting on an amazing 62.0 percent of her shots from the floor as a Lady Bulldog. In addition, she also ranks No. 3 in points (2,195), No. 2 in rebounds (1,193), No. 2 in free throws made (449), No. 2 in free throws attempted (616), No. 2 in field goals made (873), No. 9 in field goal attempts (1,407) and No. 2 in blocked shots (290).

McClain is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2012), the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2006), and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (2005). She was inducted into the UGA Circle of Honor in 1997.
