UGA falls to South Carolina as Georgia Football and fans celebrate Manny Diaz’ career

The No. 34 Georgia men’s tennis team fell to the No. 20 South Carolina Gamecocks, 4-3, in a three-hour, 33-minute contest on Friday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs (10-10, 3-5 SEC) took the doubles point for the fifth-straight match but were unable to take the three singles matches they needed to clinch the win.

In doubles, Ryan Colby and Thomas Paulsell set up the win with a victory on court two, 6-4. Cyrus Mahjoob and Miguel Perez Peña defeated Sean Daryabeigi and Jelani Sarr, 7-6(5), in a match that lasted 52 minutes for their fourth clinch together.

Freddy Blaydes defeated Carter Morgan by a 6-3, 7-5 score on court six to tie the match after the Gamecocks (11-9, 4-4 SEC) took the win on courts three and two. No. 61 Paulsell took No. 21 Toby Samuel into a third set, ultimately falling on court one and giving South Carolina match point.

No. 81 Perez Peña managed to tie the match with a three-set win on court four, marking his 22nd singles win of the year, good for most on the team. The Gamecocks then clinched the match with a narrow win on court five.

Georgia will host its final regular season home match on Sunday, March 31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Georgia has played Florida more than any other team in program history, with first serve for the 98th meeting set for 1 p.m. ET.

BSB: Georgia crushed fifth-ranked Tennessee 16-2 Friday in seven innings

Georgia senior first baseman Corey Collins, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, went 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI to lead a 14-hit attack. The Bulldogs (22-4, 4-3 SEC), who lead the country in home runs, crushed four more Friday to give them 78 on the year as the Vols (22-5, 3-4 SEC) lost for just the second time at home. Also, it marked the first time they had been run-ruled at home since the SEC put the rule in last year. Bulldog graduate Charlie Goldstein provided six strong innings, scattering nine hits, two unearned runs, no walks and three strikeouts to improve to 4-0.

The Bulldogs exploded for six runs on four hits in the second inning, sending 10 men to the plate. With one out and the bases loaded, sophomore Kolby Branch drilled an 0-2 offering to the gap in left center for a bases-clearing double. Freshman Trey King collected his first career hit in his first SEC start and then Collins smashed his 11^th home run, a three-run shot to make it 6-0. Bulldog junior Henry Hunter led off the third with a single and senior Fernando Gonzalez made it 8-0 with a two-run home run, his fifth of the year. With two on and two out, the Vols lifted junior AJ Causey in favor of Chris Stamos. Coming in Friday, Causey had a 5-0 mark and 1.91 ERA, allowing only seven earned runs on the year. However, the Bulldogs tagged him for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings as he dropped to 5-1.

The Vols cut it to 8-2 in their half of the third. They loaded bases with nobody out when Goldstein got Christian Moore to bounce into a double play. With two outs, Kavares Tears lined a run-scoring to double before the Bulldogs escaped further damage. The Vols put two on with nobody out in the fourth and came up empty as Goldstein got Cannon Peebles to flyout and then the Bulldogs turned another double play.

In the fifth, Branch led off with a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt by King. UT went to the bullpen in freshman Derek Schaefer. Collins drew a walk before Schaefer came back to strike out Charlie Condon. However, Slate Alford delivered a two-run double and Dylan Goldstein followed with a run-scoring doubles to push the lead to 11-2.

“We came out and Charlie attacked the strike zone, we played good defense and got timely hitting,” said Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Wes Johnson. “Our offense did a phenomenal job early in the game of not chasing and pushed their starter into some counts that were favorable to us. We got some good swings and did some damage. What Corey Collins is doing right now is hard to talk about. It’s impressive. We had a lot of good hits up and down the lineup. We turned some big double plays and made plays around the diamond including Charlie Condon in centerfield.”

In the sixth, Clayton Chadwick collected his third home run of the season. After Branch and King reached with singles, Collins struck again with another three-run home run for a 15-2 advantage. Last week, Collins batted .647 (11-for-17) with six home runs and 13 RBI in four games.In the seventh, Georgia added its final run on a sacrifice fly Gonzalez. Graduate Brian Zeldin took care of the Vols in the seventh including a pair of strikeouts.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch at 5:02 p.m., and the game will be available on the SEC Network and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

WGOLF: Bulldogs in second place at the UGA Golf Course in the 52nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

The Georgia women’s golf team shot 3-over 579 in Friday’s first two rounds of the 52nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, leaving the No. 25-ranked Bulldogs in second place on the team leaderboard at the UGA Golf Course.

Georgia enters Saturday’s final round six strokes off the pace of No. 10 Auburn. The Bulldogs’ B team enjoyed a solid day as well, shooting 14-over 590 to land in seventh place and ahead of two top-25 teams.

“I’d rather be leading, truthfully, especially with the start we had,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We started really strong and made just a few errors to get ourselves back in second place. But we’re in the final group and it would be nice to be there for the final event of the regular season.”

Georgia played the back half of the UGA Course first on Friday and did so at a blistering pace. The Bulldogs were 6-under as a team on 10-18 in the morning round and played the same nine holes at 5-under in the afternoon.

Caterina Don led the Bulldogs in both loops, shooting 2-under and 5-under, respectively. Individually, she is in second place, a stroke behind Carla Bernat of Kansas State.

“It was fun,” Don said. “I played well. I made a bunch more putts than I usually do so the score was lower. I was excited about that and the fun energy that was around us. It’s nice to play at home, and I enjoyed the day.”

The Bulldogs were in second, two shots back of Augusta, following on opening round effort of 2-over 290. In addition to Don’s 70, Georgia counted a 72 from LoraLie Cowart, a 73 from Natachanok “Drive” Tunwannarux and a 75, to score posted by both Savannah De Bock and Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana.

Georgia’s B team shot 299 and was in ninth after the morning. Kate Song paced those Bulldogs with an even-par 72, followed by a 74 from Bernice Olivarez Ilas, a 75 from Isabella Holpfer and a pair of 78s from Celine Brovold Sanne and Grace Frei.

The A team carded a 1-over 289 in the afternoon by mixing Don’s 67 with a 73 from De Bock, a 74 from Lertsadwattana and a 75 from Tunwannarux.

The B Bulldogs posted a 3-over 291 by counting a 1-under 71 from Holpfer, an even-par 72 from Brovold Sanne, a 73 from Olivarez Ilas and a 75 from Song.

Following Auburn and Georgia in the team field and rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 15 Florida at 584, Augusta and Kansas State at 585, Alabama at 589, Georgia’s B team at 590, Illinois at 591, No. 23 Virginia at 593 and No. 24 SMU at 595.

“We have depth,” Brewer said. “It’s just the people who are competing at the top have to show up. If not, as it has been proven in the past, some people have used this event as a springboard the rest of the year. It’s an important round tomorrow, especially for our seniors. It’s their last regular-season round, and it may be their last round ever wearing the G.”

On the individual leaderboard after Don, Holpfer is tied for 15th at 146; Song and Olivarez Ilas are tied for 18th at 147; De Bock and Tunwannarux are tied for 26th at 148; Lertsadwattana is tied for 35th at 149; Brovold Sanne is tied for 42nd at 150; Cowart is tied for 48th at 151; and Frei is tied for 70th at 157.

“It tells a lot about us,” Don said. “There are a lot of great players on our team who push each other to get better every day. It tells the people on both teams this weekend that they can compete for a top SEC team and one of the best teams in the country. They should be proud of themselves, and they should be ready to attack the day tomorrow.”

Don is approaching Saturday’s final round with a simple goal.

“I just want to have fun,” Don said. “It’s my last round on this golf course competitively. It’s my last round of regular season golf forever. I just want to go out there and fun and enjoy it with my friends and everybody around me tomorrow.”

Saturday’s second round will begin with traditional tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. Georgia’s A team will be paired with Auburn and Florida, beginning at No. 1 in intervals between 10:05-10:41. MBB: Dawgs in the Pros

Despite professional seasons beginning to wind down at home and overseas, several Georgia basketball alums are continue to star for their respective squads. 

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the Denver Nuggets have lost just one of the last nine games, a narrow two-point decision to the Dallas Mavericks on March 17. In the last six games, Caldwell-Pope has tallied 51 points (8.5 ppg), 13 rebounds (2.2 rpg), 12 assists (2.0 apg), eight blocks (1.3 bpg) and 10 steals (1.7 spg), bringing his season totals to 647 points (9.9 ppg), 153 rebounds (2.4 rpg), 154 assists (2.4 apg), 36 blocks (0.6 bpg) and 89 steals (1.9 spg). The shooting guard has started every game he has played in this season, and the Nuggets have rocketed to first place in the Western Conference with a 50-21 record.

Nic Claxton has scored 65 points (10.8 ppg) with 49 rebounds (8.2 rpg), 13 assists (2.2 apg), eight blocks (1.3 bpg) and five steals (0.8 spg) in his last six games for the Brooklyn Nets as the team moved to 26-45 to remain in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. Claxton leads his team in rebounds per game and blocks per game, and his season totals include 739 points (12.1 ppg), 594 rebounds (9.7 rpg), 125 assists (2.0 apg), 125 blocks (2.0 bpg) and 40 steals (0.7 spg). 

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Anthony Edwards have slid out of their joint occupation of first place in the Western Conference with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the team currently owns a 49-22 record, good for third place in the conference. Edwards, in his last five games, has 132 points (26.4 ppg), 44 rebounds (8.8 rpg), 34 assists (6.8 apg), five blocks (1.0 bpg) and six steals (1.2 spg). In the March 18 game against the Utah Jazz, Edwards unleashed a massive poster dunk over John Collins in the third quarter, earning the former No. 1 overall pick a Sportscenter Top-10 plays nod. On the season, Edwards has 1,798 points (26.4 ppg) – good for top 15 in the league, 377 rebounds (5.5 rpg), 351 assists (5.2 apg), 40 blocks (0.6 bpg) and 86 steals (1.3 spg). 

For the Long Island Nets, the Brooklyn Nets affiliate in the NBA G-League, Terry Roberts is still enjoying a strong rookie campaign. With 19 games played, Roberts is averaging 7.2 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game, 2.9 assists per game, 0.4 blocks per game and 1.2 steals per game. The Long Island Nets are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-14 record.

Eleven former Bulldogs are still underway in their respective seasons overseas. A review of each player’s season to date is compiled below.

Aaron Cook has scored 22 points in his last two games for Bremerhaven in the German Pro-A League, also adding six rebounds (3.0 rpg), 10 assists (5.0 apg) and eight steals (4.0 spg). Bremerhaven has slipped to 11th place in league standings with a 12-16 record but remain in position to finish the regular season in a play-off position. Now 20 games into his career with the German side, Cook has amassed 244 points (12.2 ppg), 62 rebounds (3.1 rpg), 113 assists (5.7 apg), five blocks and 34 steals (1.7 spg). 

In two regular season wins in the past two weeks, Nemanja Djurisic scored 20 points (10.0 ppg) with eight assists (4.0 apg), three assists and a steal. Ranking first on his side in two-point percentage and offensive rebounds, the forward has helped Polish outfit Stal to a 16-9 record this season, good for fourth place in league standings. On the season, Djurisic has 251 points (11.4 ppg), 126 boards (5.7 rpg), 53 assists (2.4 apg), two blocks and 16 steals (0.7 spg). 

In the Georgian Superleague, Mike Edwards is coming off a season best performance in points after posting 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four blocks in a 99-97 win over Kavkasia on March 19. Orbi has won its last two contests in league play to jump north of the .500 mark with a 9-7 record, and the team currently sits tied for fourth place in the league standings. In nine games played, Edwards has 117 points (13.0 ppg), 56 rebounds (6.2 rpg), 13 assists (1.4 apg), six blocks (0.7 bpg) and eight steals (0.9 spg). 

John Florveus recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal in Bulgarian National Basketball League side Rilski’s dominant 107-60 win over Cherno More on March 23 – the club’s largest margin of victory this season (47). The center stills leads his teams and ranks top 20 in the league in blocks (13). Season to date, Florveus has tallied 327 points, with 146 of those points coming after making his midseason transfer from fellow Bulgarian side, Levski. 

Rayshaun Hammonds continues to be a force offensively for Avtodor in the Russian VTB United League having scored in double digits in all but four of his 33 games this season. In the last two match ups, Hammonds had 30 points (15.0 ppg), nine rebounds (4.5 rpg) and three steals (1.5 spg), and the ranks first on his team in points, two-point percentage, rebounds and blocks per game. Avtodor is currently 16-17 and sits in third place of Group B in league standings on top of Hammonds’ 541 points (16.4 ppg), 214 rebounds (6.5 rpg), 39 assists (1.2 apg), eight blocks (0.2 bpg) and 31 steals (0.9 spg). 

In the BNXT League, Jordan Harris posted a season high in points (22) in Circus Brussels Basketball’s most recent outing against Belfius Mons on March 22. In the last two games, Harris has compiled 32 points (16.0 ppg), 7 rebounds (3.5 rpg), five assists (2.5 apg) and a steal. The guard has been a reliable factor on his side’s defensive efforts as he leads the team in steals, ranks second in defensive rebounds, and ranks third in blocks, while also remaining consistent at the foul line as he ranks top 10 in the league in free throw percentage. On the season, Harris has 256 points (11.6 ppg), 97 rebounds (4.4 rpg), 43 assists (2.0 apg), eight blocks (0.4 bpg) and 40 steals (1.8 spg) as his side sits in third place in the Losers Stage standings with a 1-2 record.

Jailyn Ingram’s side Gostivar in the North Macedonian Prva Liga have won the last three games by 20 points or more, while also scoring over 100 points in each contest. Ingram scored 52 points (26.0 ppg) over the last two games for Gostivar, adding on 24 rebounds (12.0 rpg), nine assists (4.5 apg), two blocks and three steals. Impressively, the forward ranks first on his team and top 10 in the league in points, assists, steals, two-point percentage, free-throw percentage and rebounds. His 393 points (19.7 ppg), 154 boards (7.7 rpg), 75 assists (3.8 apg), 21 blocks (1.1 bpg) and 4 steals (1.2 spg) have helped Gostivar to eighth place in league standings with an 8-13 record.

Yante Maten and Terrance Woodbury, competing for San-en NP and the Kumamoto Volters, respectively, have impressed in their sides most recent games. Maten scored 74 points (24.7 ppg) with 27 rebounds (9.0 rpg), seven assists (2.3 apg), three blocks and one steal in his last three games. On the season, the former Southeastern conference player of the year has 654 points (15.2 ppg), 325 rebounds (7.6 rpg), 81 assists (1.9 apg), 54 blocks (1.3 bpg) and 29 steals (0.7 spg) to help San-en NP to first place in the Central division of league standings with a 36-9 record. Woodbury, in his last two games, has 42 points (21.0 ppg), nine boards (4.5 rpg) and three assists (1.5 apg). He ranks top five on his team in points, steals, two-point percentage and three point percentage. The guard’s season totals of 804 points (19.6 ppg), 167 rebounds (4.1 rpg), 104 assists (2.5 apg), five blocks and 36 steals (0.9 spg) have helped the Volters to a 32-19 record, good for third place in the west division of league standings. 

In the Italian Serie A, Derek Ogbeide’s Pistoia are continuing to climb up the league standings, moving into sixth place with a 12-12 record. Ogbeide has offered 29 points (14.5 ppg), 21 rebounds (10.5 rpg), four blocks (2.0 bpg) and one steal in his last two games, which brings his season totals to 259 points (10.8 ppg), 197 rebounds (8.2 rpg), 24 assists (1.0 apg), 25 blocks (1.0 bpg) and 14 steals (0.6 spg). Gerald Robinson, also competing in the Serie A with Scafati, has seen his side suffer a slight skid as the team fell to 11-13 and 11th in the league standings. Robinson has 32 points (16.0 ppg), eight rebounds (4.0 rpg), 19 assists (9.5 apg) and three steal in the last two games. His 20 points against Tortona on March 17 marked his second 20 or more points outing this season, and his 11 assists against Brindisi on March 24 were a season high. Robinson ranks first on his team and second in the league in assists. To date, Robinson has 240 points (10.9 ppg), 53 rebounds (2.4 rpg), 132 assists (6.0 apg), five blocks and 30 steals (1.4 spg).

Recapping Action

Georgia run-ruled the Kennesaw State Owls in five innings Wednesday, 10-1. Tyler Ellison recorded her first career multi-hit game with two hits, driving in a career-best four RBI to lead the offense. A two-home run day by Sydney Chambley also highlighted the offense. Along with Ellison and Chambley, Sara Mosley, Jayda Kearney, and Jaydyn Goodwin all had two hits. Shelby Walters pitched two innings in her start, allowing an unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Rachel Gibson, Destin Howard, and Riley Orcutt each pitched an inning in relief. Orcutt (1-0) was awarded the win as the most effective reliever, picking up her first win of the season.

A Look at What’s Ahead

The Bulldogs will host the Mercer Bears in midweek action on Wednesday at Jack Turner Stadium. First pitch against the Bears is set for 6 p.m. Georgia then hits the road for an SEC series at No. 4 Tennessee. The series against the Lady Vols will begin April 5 in Knoxville.

Coaching Connections

Arkansas assistant coach Danielle Gibson Whorton will make her return to Athens this weekend. Gibson Whorton served on Tony Baldwin’s staff as volunteer coach in 2023. Additionally, Arkansas grad manager Peyton Nobles was a team manager for the Bulldogs from 2022-23.

Sara Mosley: The RBI Machine

Sara Mosley currently leads the SEC with 45 total RBI this season with that number ranking fourth in the country. Her 1.41 RBI per game also leads the conference and is sixth in the country. She has recorded nine multi-RBI games this season, four of those games she drove in five or more runs. Her 208 career RBI rank sixth all-time at Georgia and currently sixth among active Division I players.

Dawgs Dig the Long Ball

Between Georgia softball’s 57 home runs and baseball’s Division I-leading 74, UGA combines for the most home runs in the country with 131. Virginia Tech comes in behind Georgia with 125.

Leadoff Lyndi Finds New Home in Order

Lyndi Rae Davis has found a new spot at the top of the Georgia batting order. Since taking over the leadoff role on March 8, Davis has drawn 19 walks in 14 games and put together a .564 on-base clip. She leads Georgia with 29 walks this season. Her 0.94 walks per game ranks second in the SEC and sixth in the nation.
