SWIM: Nic Fink qualified for his second-consecutive Olympics

The University of Georgia swimming team placed its first Bulldog on the American roster Sunday at the 2024 United States Olympic Swimming Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium.

  • Bulldog alum Nic Fink qualified for his second-consecutive Olympics with a victory in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, taking the race with a time of 59.08. Fink joins fellow alum Javier Acevedo of Canada as the first two Bulldog products to officially earn a ticket to Paris. Fink finished fifth in the 200m breaststroke at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is the reigning world champion in the 100m.
  • Bulldog alum and reigning Olympic gold medalist Chase Kalisz earned a likely third trip to the Games with a second-place time of 4:09.39 in the men’s 400m individual medley. Kalisz was one of three Bulldogs in the top four, with alum Jay Litherland placing third at 4:12.34, followed by recent graduate Ian Grum in fourth with a new personal-best time of 4:15.06. Grum previously set a PB in prelims with a time of 4:16.25, while incoming Bulldog Drew Hitchcock finished 17th with a time of 4:20.32.
  • Rising graduate Jake Magahey finished 12th in the men’s 200m freestyle semifinals with a time of 1:47.22. Magahey also finished 12th in prelims with a time of 1:47.06, followed by rising fifth-year Luca Urlando in 19th at 1:47.63. Rising senior Reese Branzell placed 33rd with a new PB of 1:49.14, while recent graduate Zach Hils tied for 48th at 1:50.73.
  • Recent graduate Zoie Hartman placed 12th in the women’s 100m breaststroke semifinals with a time of 1:08.31.
  • Recent graduate Bradley Dunham finished 23rd in the men’s 100m backstroke prelims with a time of 55.04. Rising junior Aaron Seymour finished 60th with a time of 55.98, while recent graduate Zach Franklin placed 71st at 56.67.
  • Rising junior Shea Furse finished 27th in the women’s 200m freestyle prelims with a new PB of 2:00.09. Incoming freshman Marie Landreneau finished 38th with a time of 2:00.93, followed closely by rising graduate Sloane Reinstein in 40th place at 2:01.30 and recent graduate Jillian Barczyk in 47th at 2:02.72.

Up Next

The U.S. Olympic Trials continue Monday with prelims in the women’s 400m IM, women’s 100m backstroke, and men’s 800m freestyle. Prelims stream at 11 a.m. on Peacock, followed by semifinals and finals at 8 p.m. on NBC.
