From The Field: Georgia vs. Clemson 2024

The last time Kirby and Co. were on the field, the Dawgs were systematically dismantling Florida State’s excuse-riddled Seminoles – unconquered, my (uh) foot.

Moving on.

In preparation for Saturday’s game with longtime rival Clemson, I can’t help but feel a bit nervous. I am not fearful of a loss in Atlanta, but the prospect of facing such a quality opponent in the opener is a challenge these 2024 Dawgs must meet with new faces all over the field. At least Tennessee Tech is next on the schedule, allowing the team to nurse minor injuries for the killer Kentucky, Alabama, and Auburn stretch that follows. Thank goodness for the open date before Bama, but it would have been nice to have two games to get the new guys bloodied for the following monstrous month.

Although Clemson’s squad is not the equal of Georgia based on recruiting rankings, Clemson is a quality football team that can win this game. For UGA to fulfill its favorite role, it must be wary of the following.

Cade Klubnik’s Potential Breakout: Clemson quarterback Klubnik possesses the talent to make big plays and elevate Clemson’s offense. Glenn Schumann must prepare Georgia’s defense for his mobility and ability to extend plays. Pressure is the key.

Clemson’s Offense Under Garrett Riley: The Tigers’ offensive coordinator, Garrett Riley, has introduced a revamped system that promises to be more dynamic and unpredictable. His offense poses a significant challenge for Georgia’s defense. The Bulldogs must find ways to limit the Tigers’ ability to score points quickly and in bunches.

Clemson is a quality football team that can win this game, and they are likely feeling extremely motivated to prove themselves against the highly-touted Bulldogs. Georgia must understand the urgency of matching Clemson’s intensity from the opening kickoff, avoiding any hint of complacency. This game is also crucial for the team’s confidence, and every player must bring their A-game.

The game comes down to the usual factors for Kirby Smart-coached teams. Clemson will come out of the chute with hair on fire. National TV, ACC vs. SEC, Kirby vs. Dabo, the Tigers will bring a complete and thorough plan to Atlanta, confident that Georgia’s talent advantage is offset by Riley’s game plan and the desire of a team motivated by Dabo Swinney.

The Bulldogs roll into the Aflac Kickoff Game with many questions and doubters. They will prevail (and head back to Athens) with consecutive regular season win number 40 inscribed in the record books, and a better understanding of what aspects of their game must improve before moving into the meat of their SEC schedule.
