Georgia Defeats No. 1 Texas 30-15 for Coach Smart’s 100th Career Win

The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs defeated the No. 1 Texas Longhorns by a score of 30-15 in Darrell K Royal- Texas Memorial Stadium.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw two interceptions in the first quarter, giving the Longhorns some early momentum and energy. However, the Georgia defense was able to make key stops, highlighted by a Daylen Everette strip-sack of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. The turnover set the Dawgs up on the Texas 28 yard-line, and running back Trevor Etienne rushed for his first touchdown and the lead by seven.

In the second quarter, Ewers turned the ball over for a second time in Texas territory to Everette, this time with an interception. ETN would find the end zone yet again with a 15-yard rush to extend the lead to 17-0. In the final seconds of the half, kicker Peyton Woodring nailed his third field goal of the quarter to make the score 23-0.

Out of the break, Georgia kicked a squib kick that set up Texas with great field position near midfield. Ewers found star wide receiver Isaiah Bond for a short touchdown pass and two-point conversion to get the Longhorns within 15 points.

Toward the end of the third, the Bulldogs faced a third down. Beck threw the ball toward Arian Smith and it was intercepted by Longhorns defensive back Jahdae Barron, but originally called back for defensive pass interference. The student section end zone was suddenly covered with plastic bottles in opposition to the call. After the event was cleaned up, the officials waved off the flag and gave Texas the ball at Georgia’s nine yard line. Ewers would find running back Jaydon Blue for a 17-yard touchdown. Just like that, the Dawgs once 23-point lead was down to eight.

In what might have been the play of the year for Beck, he completed a pass to Smith on third and ten for 21 yards and a momentum-changing first down. The offense would cap off the drive with Etienne’s third touchdown of the night to all but end Texas’ hopes of a comeback.

The Georgia defense was elite. While the Dawgs’ offense gave up three turnovers, the Junkyard Dawgs forced four Longhorn miscues. On third down, Texas was just 2-of-15 and 1-of-5 on fourth down. While it wasn’t perfect at times, and the Texas crowd tried to will their team back into the game time after time, Smart and the Bulldogs found a way to force stops when it mattered most.

This win marks Kirby Smart’s 100th-win as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, making him the fourth coach in program history to do so.

Georgia will have a much-needed bye week before heading down to Jacksonville to face the Florida Gators in “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” on November 2nd at 3:30.
