5 Hoop Dawgs To Watch
Blue Cain

Blue Cain (G #0) – Cain is one of Georgia’s returning starters and a fan favorite in Athens. While he only averaged 7.8 points per game last season, his threat from behind the arc was impactful in many games. Although the sample size is small, Cain is performing better this season in points, rebounds, and assists per game. As he polishes up his percentage from the three-point line, the experience of a second-year guard will be very beneficial for a team that has two true freshmen on the floor often.

Silas Demary Jr. (G #5) – After speculation of transferring this offseason, Demary Jr. remained in  Athens for his second collegiate season. While averaging 9.7 points per game last year, he had the opportunity to play alongside experienced Dawgs such as Noah Thomasson and Jabri Abdur-Rahim, both who were pivotal leaders of the Hoop Dawgs. Similar to Blue Cain, Demary Jr. is performing better this year in each of the main three statistics. While he will only be a sophomore, Demary Jr. carries himself like a senior, and will take on a leadership role as the starting guard moving forward.

RJ Godfrey (F #10) – The son of Georgia football legend Randall Godfrey spent his first few collegiate years at Clemson. Yet, he decided to transfer back to his home state for his junior season. Through the Bulldogs’ first four games, Godfrey leads the team in rebounds per game. The 6’8” forward is not only high in the rebound rankings for the team, but he is also high on the rankings of the entire SEC in rebounds per game. He’s already on track to have the best season of his career by a large margin. Against North Florida, Godfrey recorded a career high 23 points and 12 rebounds for his second collegiate double-double.

Asa Newell (F #14) – The long-awaited debut of five-star Asa Newell was no disappointment. In his first game in the red and black, Newell tied Dominique Wilkins’ freshman debut scoring record with 26 points. The highest-rated recruit since Anthony Edwards currently leads the team in points per game, shooting 53.6% from the field, and blocks per game with 3.3. Newell was the fourth-ranked power forward in the 2024 class. He attended Montverde Academy, the same high school as NBA players such as Cade Cunningham, RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes, etc. The school has been known to produce elite basketball talent.

Dakota Leffew (G #1) – There’s another new face to Mike White’s team. Dakota Leffew spent his first four seasons with Mount St. Mary’s. He has been coming off the bench so far this season but has still received a substantial amount of playing time. In his role, he has thrived thus far and has been able to be a serious threat in the scoring game. Leffew is second on the team in points per game off the bench, and there are six players averaging over nine PPG. The key for this team will be consistent performances from depth pieces across the roster.
