MBB: Blue Cain Interview
The following interview is by John Frierson, Assistant Sports Communications Director John Frierson is the staff writer for the UGA Athletic Association
As a freshman on the Georgia men’s basketball team last season, Blue Cain made an impact on both ends of the floor, ranking third on a veteran-heavy team with 50 3-pointers and 30 steals. He stood out with his blond ponytail and drew roars of “Bluuuuuee!” with every 3 he hit.
This season, the ponytail is gone but Cain, a 6-foot-5 guard from Knoxville, Tenn., still gets the crowd going with his 3s. A year ago, he was one of four players to take the floor in all 37 games, starting nine of the Bulldogs’ final 10. He’s been in the starting lineup from the opener this season, and through nine games is averaging 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. Cain had 15 points and eight rebounds in Georgia’s upset of No. 6 Kentucky on Tuesday night.
During a recent Quick Chat, Cain talked about this year’s team, his haircut, how he’s improved from last season, and much more. Here’s some of what he had to say:
Frierson: This year’s team feels like a more talented, athletic and complete group to me. What does it feel like to you compared to last season?
Cain: It definitely feels a little different from last year. Like you said, I think we’re more complete, I think we’re more talented, and I just think we have, we just have really good dudes this year. I’m excited. I really am.
Frierson: How are you a better player today than you were a year ago at this point?
Cain: I just think I’m more of a, I guess, just a team player. Coach (Mike White) always talks about how 5% of the game is like, shooting and all that, and then 95% is like, all the other stuff. I think I’ve just gotten much better just focusing on the other stuff.
Frierson: I have to ask about the hairstyle change. Was there something specific behind that or was it just time to do something different?
Cain: I was just tired of it at the end of the year. I just wanted it gone, so I cut it right after the season.
Frierson: Who is the funniest guy on this year’s team?
Cain: The funniest guy is either Justin (Abson), BK (Brandon Klatsky), or Jordyn Kee. Those three are all really funny.
Frierson: Looking back on your freshman year, was there one part of the college basketball experience that was way harder or more challenging than you expected?
Cain: I kind of knew what to expect coming in just from talking to people. The season was long; it felt longer than I thought it was going to, especially toward the end — it felt like we’d been playing for a long time. I’d probably say that was probably the hardest part, but it was pretty much what I expected.
Frierson: Watching the NBA now, you see teams like the Celtics who are often taking a lot more 3-pointers a game than 2-pointers. What do you think when you watch the league these days?
Cain: It’s fun to watch. I enjoy watching that type of basketball. I mean, it is interesting to see, especially those guys. I mean, I think it was two nights ago, Jrue Holiday got up 17 3s by himself. So it’s just like, it’s wild to watch, but I enjoy watching it,
Frierson: What is the best present you’ve ever received?
Cain: The best present I’ve ever received was probably my dog, Spike. He’s a Jack Russell (Terrier) and I’ve had him since I was in second grade. And, yeah, that’s my best friend.
Frierson: Is he with you in Athens?
Cain: No, he has a couple of health conditions, so I just figured it’d probably be best to just leave him at home. But he comes down sometimes, like he came down for Thanksgiving, and my mom brings him down as much as she can.
