Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery has been named the SEC Tennis Freshman of the Week following his performance against Georgia Tech, it was announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Montgomery won his first career match at No. 1 to help the fourth-ranked Bulldogs defeat Georgia Tech 4-3 last Friday. His 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 49 Nathan Rakitt was his seventh win against a ranked opponent and gave Georgia its first team point in the victory over Tech. The Cape Town, South Africa, native is 21-4 in his freshman campaign and climbed to No. 17 in this week’s ITA rankings.

Montgomery and the fourth-ranked Bulldogs will take on No. 15 Columbia in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Friday at 7:30 p.m.
