DES MOINES, Iowa — Georgia sophomore Kendell Williams did not reach a height in the high jump and pulled out of the two-day heptathlon competition during a cool, windy first day at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Kendell was not able to clear her first height in the high jump and we decided to shut it down to continue training for the (Southeastern Conference) Championships in a couple weeks,” said Bulldog associate head coach and multis coach Petros Kyprianou.
[su_spacer size=”40″] With temperatures in the low 50s and winds varying between 20 and 30 miles per hour, Williams shot to an early lead after winning the 100-meter hurdles with a 13.42. This time earned the Marietta, Ga., native 1,062 points.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Williams passed up to the height of 5 feet, 5 ¼ inches in the high jump and then did not clear the bar in her three tries. Following the heptathlon’s second event, she pulled out of the competition and will now focus on training for the SEC Championships, which will be in Starkville, Miss., on May 14-16.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Junior Christian Harrison is slated to run for Georgia in the unseeded 800 at 5:50 p.m. on Thursday at the Drake Relays and junior Steven Spevacek will line up in the 5000 at 10:05 p.m. On the women’s side, senior Marrion Kalafut and freshman Addy Lippitt are expected to complete 25 laps in the 10,000 at 8:30 p.m. during the second day of action for Georgia.
